EgyptAir flight from Paris to Cairo missing

Well did they or did they not?!

I still find it crazy that I can track a plane on my mobile phone (to what degree of accuracy I am not sure) but as soon as something goes wrong the plane disappears. I can understand not being able to trace it using the conventional methods if the plane has a fault but surely they know the general area it was in would radar or other technology not pick it up?

There isn't that much radar coverage in the world, especialy over seas and oceans.

What would be the point in it half the time? Putside of military purposes

And so the chances of my stepping onto an aeroplane in the near future decrease even more.

There's not that much room for it to go missing this time is there?

Statistically you are more likely to die from laughing at the silly things people say on the internet than in a plane crash.

I also went on 2 planes last week and i'm here, i'm not the best flier either.

What i find strange though is that the plane was at 37,000ft and only 20 minutes from landing, surely it would have started its descent by then? I mean, we started our descent over London last week, 30 minutes before landing in Manchester. Same on the way out to BGY, we started descending about 30 minutes from landing.

depends on the airport and runway, been on a plane when captain has come on say 15 minutes to landing

Pretty well to be honest.

"In the United States, between 1983 and 2000, there were 568 plane crashes. In 90% of them there were survivors, and out of the 53,487 people onboard, 51,207 survived."

Intriguing. I wonder what constitutes a crash though. Heck they could be including the pilot scuffing the walkway when he rolls up as a crash :D.

Regardless doesn't stop me flying. If anything did happen either I survive or I do rather like everything else in life.

I guess. Do the apps work from transponders?

How far do radars reach from Airports? I think I read that once an airplane is 150miles away it can no longer been seen by Primary radar.

Might have been 20 mins from the airport, not necessarily landing?

Might have been going into a stack? Although probably unlikely at that time in the morning?

Also as echoed previously, depends on runways, flight paths, ceilings etc.?

Looking at that graph, does it not look like they flew very low for a few minutes, perhaps looking for a safe ditch as close to the coast as possible?

How accurate is this sort of data generally?

I'd imagine if the stats were 'survivors of plane crashes where the last contact was above 10,000ft' things would be a little different. They are probably "crashes" in the same sense a trading of paint in morrisons is a "crash"

Well there is no guarantee you will be killed instantly in a car crash. You could end up trapped in the vehicle and slowly bleeding out from a horrific injury while screaming for help. Or you could be trapped as the vehicle is slowly engulfed in flames and you burn to death.

This is true, and also a horrible fate - but just thinking about it; that jet had what... ~8 minutes or so of falling from 37,000 feet; during that time one can only assume (if they hadn't blacked out) that these were healthy living people; subjected to absolute terror.

Someone trapped in car wreakage could equally experience that same duration, but at that point their body would have kicked off a number of inbuilt protection measures, to take away some of the pain - blacking out etc, release of chemicals etc etc. At least that's what my body did when I was hit by a car off my motorcycle. As for burning alive in a car, again it's something hard to understand - but I would imagine a fireball of a wreack might see you burnt in less than a minute or so.

This is all based of my own thoughts, nothing factual - but when you see people admit a fear of flying, only to have it shot down by the age old car argument, then to be labelled a silly stupid... it should really get you thinking a bit more as to why there's a fear.

I always say to my wife that if something goes wrong on the road, you're already on the ground - up in the air, you have that horror of waiting to die :( Hearing the reports of the recording from that Apls flight - the comment about people's screams suddenly get louder just before hte end of the recording is harrowing to me.

Even so, I wouldn't not take a flight, now that I have been to so many amazing countires - I look forward to my next flight.
