Tap. Pay. UK. - Android Pay in the UK

Tried it today and now it's telling me to phone my bank, I'll give them a buzz later when I get a chance but this hasn't been straight forward at all.

Samsung pay is supposed to be better. Allowing you to use all PDQ machines and not just those with tap and pay. It uses the magnetic strip reader. Samsung S7 owners are getting later this year afaik and that would probably mean you can safely leave your wallet at home.

Surely they will mostly be tap and pay before long anyway. I'm not really interested in Samsung Pay as my next phone might not be a Samsung device.

Which bank? Not tried it myself yet but a friend used it yesterday with Nationwide and had no such complications.

Surely swiping is becoming old tech?

Will Samsung Pay work on the ones you put your card in from the bottom?

Samsung Pay uses both contactless and MST (magnetic). MST works by emulating a card "swipe" using magnetic read when placed next to the swipe reader. All PDQ terminals I've seen have a swipe function for when chip and pin isn't working. So yeah Samsung Pay will effectively work anywhere with a card machine to pay for goods.

Samsung pay also has no payment limit, so is better than the others.

I'm confused about the £30 limit though. I'm pretty sure that's a hard limit for any contactless transaction. What happens if you try to do contactless with a £50 transaction? Does it fail, or just ask you for your PIN? I've never tried

Barclaycard advertise their limit as £100, can't imagine they'd do that if it wasn't actually possible...

Well possibly but I expect that will take some time. Small shops such as news agents and convenience stores just about take cards and use antiquated equipment. I do not suspect they will be investing any time soon. The Samsung way means you can pay anywhere with these machines and now (well, when they get around to releasing it here).

Fair enough, I still don't think I'm interested in a solution from a specific manufacturer. I can cope with using cash where I need to for now.

Any reason why there aren't stock images in the app for common loyalty cards? Seems a bit naff having to snap your own mediocre picture!

Better things to focus on like getting it working than trawling through the many hundreds of possible loyalty card providers trying to get stock images?

I'm a bit disappointed if all it does with store cards is display them so you can scan them as normal, I was hoping you could just tap once and it would both charge you and register your card, maybe something for the future.

Installed yesterday - with Nationwide and it was easy as anything to set up. Interesting that you can make payments over £30, didn't know that would be a thing.

Depends on the store surely? Most loyalty cards aren't contactless.

I've added my Nectar card, Subway card and Tesco card. The way it got the information from the cards was via a bar code, so why doesn't the app display the barcode which could be scanned and only the number? Maybe because it isn't quite ready to work yet.

Anyone had any joy getting this to work with Smart Unlock running?

I'm using a HTC M8, stock up to date Android, but when I add the card, it gets confirmed by my bank but states that I need to have a PIN screen in place to use the app or the card will get deleted. Well I do have a PIN screen; I just assume Smart Unlock makes it look like I don't.

I don't want to do away with Smart Unlock as I want a PIN on my phone when I'm away but not when I'm at home connected to Wifi. Any ideas?
