But I'm willing to put money on the fact that a max clocked 1080 wont beat max clocked SLI 980's.
Has anyone said it would?

Exactly. That is like comparing the 1080 to stock 980Ti performance, seen as a 980 at those clocks will be getting close to 980Ti performance.
Such a stupid comparison.
I don't know why people are bothering - the reviews mostly show good performance against the 980SLI setups largely backing up nVidia's claim even if it isn't a clean sweep across the board.
the 'Founders/Throttlers edition'
who cares, so long as it's got an nvidia logo on it and a higher model number I'm game
Surely everything is already being discussed in the other trashed threads, why do people keep posting more?
Stock for stock I don't know the results. Maybe the 1080 is better.

So it appears the 1080 most definitely is not "the overclocker's dream", 10% clock increase for 1-2% more FPS.

Not sure where he is getting his numbers from unless mistaking the gamersnexus results like some others - IIRC they are getting an average of 8-9% performance increase from a ~10% increase in clock speed - but if you aren't paying attention it looks like 1-2% because they were comparing their DIY hybrid cooled results against the FE cooler OC'd results and not against the non-overclocked card.
