A friend of mine needs a new graphics card as his has stopped working.

He has a Sapphire 7950 and wants to replace it with something at least as good or maybe better. I don't follow the GPUs these days so I've no idea where this fits in.

He has a budget of £150 and would consider used if need be.

Any suggestions on what cards to look at?

Thanks all, I'm sure he'll want it quickly but I'll keep a look out in the MM incase something turns up there.

So a 290 is faster than a 380?

Considering a 380 is just a rebranded 285, which has very similar performance to the 280X, which in turn is just a rebranded 7970, then yes, a 290 (which got rebranded as the 390) does a fair bit faster than the 380.

Does he not have an IGP or a spare GPU lying around? Polaris is so, so close to release :D.

the 290 is a solid card as long as you stay clear of the awful reference design cooler. But as said in above post.. Polaris is so extremely close.. like 2 weeks..

Further to above, I think he's having problems justifying the cost, how does the GTX 950 compare or the best card for say £120

It'll be a bit worse than what he had. Quieter and more power efficient but 1gb less vram and less powerful.

There's a 280 in the MM right now which is exactly the same as a 7950.
