Have I lost my no claims bonus?

Hi all,

I had a NCB of 5 years and I have proof of this dating back to early 2014, at which point I sold my car and cancelled my policy.

However as I haven't owned a car since then I haven't had a car insurance policy. I am now looking to buy a car and the cheapest quote was from Endsleigh, but they do not allow proof over 24 months old (mine is now about 26-27 months old).

Have I lost out completely? Does anyone know any insurers that allow up to 3 years?

Thanks,
Nick

It's two years from date of cancellation. I cancelled my brothers insurance for him on Saturday as he is travelling and that is what Aviva told me.

A gradual reduction for non-use would be a fairer model than losing the whole lot completely. But then, when is car insurance ever fair!

Ring up admiral, they will often give you a credit for your no claims as a welcome offer, first year, not protected, but gets you back to where you were as long as you don't smash your car up in that year.

Contact your previous insurer.

I was going through the motions a couple weeks ago for the Seat. My wife and I alternate our policies on the "second" car, as we both have 6 years NCD (I have my 9 assigned to the BMW). And we pretty much do have to alternate from one year to the next. (Only having 2 cars insured and 3 policies ATM so...)

However, they did say they would honour up to 3 years between policies, if the previous policy was held with them, and there was a reasonable excuse. It cost me an extra £40 to go with the wife than for me to go again this year, but because she would have been 2 weeks over the 2 years threshold, I decided to just go ahead with the swap, so we aren't tied down to Direct Line next year anyway.

But you should try your previous insurers anyway. They may be able to help.

I'll give them a try, although I realised I am just over 3 years and not just over 2 years, so even they may not be able to help.

I'll try Admiral too.

Thanks all.

My other half lost her NCB when we went to one car. Chaucer direct matched my other halves NCB to my NCB after one year. So she lost 5 years NCB but gained 5 years NCB after being claims free for one year.

Good deal as the policy was cheaper than anywhere else. Maybe if there is someone else in your household you may be able to get a similar deal.

Yup i lost mine the same way, been driving for 29 years no accidents now get quoted silly money, even though I'm a named driver on 3 other cars.

Luckily I knew about this, been without a my own car just over a year (Got a company van when I started new job). So me and the Mrs now alt on our only car to keep both sets of NCB until we have two cars again.

Yes but if you have done no driving for 2 years, perhaps you are more likely to have an accicent, who knows, they will know, I am sure there is a purpose behind that date.

Being named on a policy doesn't build or retain ncb. I was named on our car and still have to alt to keep both sets of ncb.

There could be a company out there that does something I guess. But when adding a named driver to every policy I've ever had, they never actually ask for that drivers NCB. Just length of time with licence, claims and convictions.
