But it does make the room nice and cold (15c).
15 degrees and we wonder why the world has an energy crisis, let me guess in winter you warm the house to 25!

You sound like the kind of guy who treats waiters like crap.

Do you really need to run it whilst your asleep?
I found that when I installed AC into a bedroom (split unit) once you got it nicely cooled in the summer you didnt need to run it all night, as it was nice and chilly when I went to bed (seemed very odd shivering when its 20+ degrees and muggy outside) that I would easily fall asleep and it wasnt terribly hot when I woke in the morning.
As far as portable is concerned I have one of them as well. Cant remember the make but I agree they do work well. I found the exhaust hose got hot to the touch and radiated heat so i covered it with a fleece as well.
Blocking your window all comes down to exactly what you have, I had sash when I used the portable which were awesome, a think piece of a sort of expanded foam rubber type thing with a hole in it meant the room was 99% sealed from the outside.
Each window type probably needs a slightly different approach to getting a good seal.
No my good man you are right in that I do not need to, but the issue is that sometimes I get home late (or sometimes just forget to pre-cool the room) and then I put it on to cool the room down, which takes around 30 mins or so. In that time I often fall asleep.
I live in a rented apartment so unfortunately installing a split unit is not an option.
Yeah, I got pretty good at making an effective seal using using foam and towelling, it did the job at least and the end result was that I could sleep in comfort which is all that matters to me.
I'm an awful sleeper, and more so when in Summer so a cool room means the difference between functioning or not functioning the next day.![]()
Must admit I've been looking into this as well recently. I couldn't find a "quiet" one all seem to hover from 40db upwards. Googling for quiet ones always brought up sites saying buying a split unit.
Is it a single room apartment? I ended up putting mine in another room adjacent to my bedroom walls knocked out most of the noise.
Might be worth looking into a timed one if you can predict the days you get home late, be nice and cold and quiet by the time you get home.
Annoyingly I can't find the 40db one anymore so either I imagined it or its EOL.
50db seems to be the quietest I can find currently.
Maybe look into the app controlled ones. Turn it on remotely an hour or so before you'll get home.
