I'm looking for any recommendations for a smallish family car that will be used for a 30 (each way) mile daily commute. Mostly motorway driving. I think my mileage isn't massively high enough to say definite diesel, so willing to consider either. Would need to be a manual and looking for something with pace if possible. Budget is around 10-13k depending on what car I'm getting. Performance wise I'll take what I can get. I'm selling a Cayman S, so aware that nothing in this bracket will compare on this budget for this use.

I had been looking at a Focus for 8-10k, but was in a friends recently 1.6tdci and the performance was a bit lacking. My friend showed my their 320d which has pushed me towards one for better performance and a nice package than the ford, but obviously at a bigger budget 11-13k.

Are there any cars that I need to add to my testing list? Any advice welcome.

(Cayman is a 2006 and thrown quite a few bills recently and not really the best car to be leaving in a public car park at work and getting 26mpg isn't helping. Also becoming a pain for moving things around now I've got a house)

Don't get a 1.6tdci, there is an inherent design flaw with the oil circulation which leads to turbo failure. Ford won't acknowledge this yet they have released a TSB for it.

I had one blow up on me, not sour or anything :).
