AMD looking for MArketing Director

I think this is a big mistake on AMDs behalf

"• Minimum of 10+ years’ experience in PC industry technology marketing"

A great marketer is a great marketer. They shouldn't limit themselves to someone from inside the industry. They could do well with some fresh thinkers coming in from outside the industry.

Maybe they realise they need to up their marketing game?

I would love to apply but it's based in Texas. :(:(

They also have a public relations director job going at the same place. Definitely pushing marketing and branding.

Go for it Beany Bot.....A Donkey in a dress could up their marketing game at the moment.

Errr....BTW I am not saying you are a donkey in a dress, or even a donkey or even someone who wears a dress....you get my drift though...yeah!!

:D

Can't move to Texas, wife and kids and all that.
Plus I'm marketing in the Pharma industry. They are looking (silly IMO) for someone from within the industry.

I certainly see your point, but I think AMD might need someone with that level of technical knowledge to be credible. We know how great us techies are for remembering even a single misspoken comment ("Overclockers dream", "The 970 has 64 ROPs") so if a great marketer came in from outside of the industry and accidentally drops a clanger during a Q&A due to being new to the sector, they would forever be known by that clanger alone.

You have a very good point about bringing in fresh thinkers, but maybe it's better to put them one level behind the scenes rather than up front and centre like a Marketing Director is likely to be.

True but a Marketing Director wouldn't be doing Q&A's. The public relations guys would be and yes, you are quite right. They should be someone from within the industry for the very reasons you have outlined.

The Marketing Director should be from within the industry. Its his team he manages which doesn't necessarily need to be from the industry.

That's certainly a safer bet. And is widely practiced. But unless your boss is very very good then it can be an idea killer, innovation stopper and staff de-motivator. Dynamic and different ideas from the team often get shot down by the industry specific director who wont change his spots.

Do AMD really want to play safe with their marketing right now...?
