Many will purchase the new 10xx line up for VR. But is it worth getting a beasty 1080 and waiting for VR to settle and develop or 1070 and oculus rift. Either choices seem close enough in price. Thoughts?

either better for VR than current cards.

General advice is avoid this first gen of VR be it the rift or the HTC Vive.

The rift is lacking controls plus room interaction and as such you dont get the full VR experience.

The HTC Vive is the full package but ouch at the price - almost £700.

Both are heavy and even the Vive is only 1080x1200 res.

second generation will be cheaper, higher res and lighter.

But if i was getting one today it would have to be the Vive. If you can afford £700 on a first gen VR which will be surpassed next year by something half the price then dropping £620 on a 1080 shouldnt be an issue :P

I have an oculus rift on pre order coming expectedly end of July. had a GTX 970 and sold when 1080 release was announced to avoid free fall prices. I have a 4k monitor and don't want to do 1080p ever again. Spoilt in other words :p Though i have really been looking forward to VR. I cant justify the 1080 price yet, though i'm not optimistic the 1070 will satisfy my graphic cravings for more than a year. Appreciate your opinion though :)

The Rift is actually stunningly light. Have you tried the consumer version?

Also not so sure prices are going to come down that quickly or that we're gonna get anything better next year. I'm thinking there's gonna be more like a 2-3 year gap between generations and any intermediate rival headsets will not be as good overall and not well supported.

Wont be pulling the trigger until 4K screens and bigger FOV. Then it will be true "VR".
Screen door and black edges to vision just kill it for me.

Yes its still weighs half a kilo!

Still only 1080x1200 res, controllers and room space which arent available for another few months will probably cost you the £300 difference to the Vive.

So basically its going to be £800 for whichever system you go for.

I think technology will progress quickly on these as it will be the next great thing.

So quality and price will tumble. £800 is too much for my liking for first gen IMO. The res and FOV isnt there yet but it looks very promising.

Don't forget there are already 20 rival VR headsets set to launch this year, prices will tumble.

And how good are they? How well supported will they be?

Prices can only tumble if the costs come down. And the costs can only come down if they can scale the manufacturing quantities much higher.

Prices dont just magically drop. There has to be legitimate factors to bring it about and make them feasible.

As for the Rift weighing half a kilo - it certainly doesn't feel like it with the weight distribution it has. It is certainly much lighter than you'd expect just looking at it.

both sony and microsoft have vr headsets launching for their consoles, game support will be very good for them. In fact at launch Sony will have more VR games available than the rift and hive put together. And you know Microsoft will be throwing loads of games at the xbox VR.

And looking at the gpu manufacturers its all about VR this year.

VR will be the next huge thing, no doubt about it.

So prices will drop cause of volume of sales and the tech will advance rapidly. Look at 4k tvs. They were £20k when launched and you can now get a better one for under £1000. Yes some people had to buy the £20k set, but I will wait a year or so for things to settle down and see which platform(s) wins.

Would be nothing worse than jumping in with a £800 platform only to find that it disappears within a year due to lack of support or other factors. It will be like betamax vs vhs again. And in that scenario, Betamax was the better quality and superior but lost because of who was backing VHS. The best doesnt always win in the end.

If you ordered a rift now you wouldn't get it until August,
by which time we will know a lot more about current and future graphics cards

For example we dont really know exactly how much better the 1070 will be than the 970 in actual VR performance.

Second gen VR wont be here for quite some time I imagine, at least another year if not longer

Rival headsets wont exceed the Rift in quality so will still count as gen 1, although they might be cheaper.
Xbox allegedly going to support the CV1 at some point, but probably will need to make a new console first that isn't 5 years
out of date.

So perhaps order aftermarket 1080 and wait for xmas time for oculus rift. Heard its better with lenses. 1070 comparison with 1080 may be the decider on that.

still think its mad that you could have a rift today which you preordered but the proper controllers are out until second half 2016 at prices unknown.

Poor launch.

Very poor launch. had a go of the Dev 2 and could see rgb in the pixels. Sure there's been a big improvement, but I think maybe a wait will be worth it for cheaper or next model. Still, 1070 Vr or just 1080 for a little more performance.. tough call.

Well no, Microsoft actually dont have any VR headset lined up for the Xbox. Not that we know of, at least.

As for Sony, it's simply not true that it'll have more titles on launch than the Rift and Vive combined. In fact, most of the titles it'll have for it are going to be ports from the PC side. There's a lot more VR content for the PC than what is most commonly advertised.

I agree PSVR has a good chance of success, but I was mainly referring to PC VR.

VR is going to be a slow burn if it's going to be some huge thing. It will not receive huge adoption numbers til the price comes down and the price cant come down unless the quantities needed to be produced go up significantly. Bit of a chicken/egg situation.

And of course prices will come down *eventually*. But I'm talking about the near future(6-12 months).

Don't think many have really given their view and preference to the original question other than facts. In other words, what would you do?

I read this and call it all ********

****ing love my rift would have paid 1000 pounds for it. I was totally burned out as a gamer in everything thanks to Rift im back at it playing games videos photos music EVERYTHING ON RIFT 3-4 hours a day a month now.

Second gen ?? Where is the preorder option im putting money up front. All this gen lacks for me is Better resolution.

And weight ?? whats that ******** iw spent 14 hours in my rift Constantly taking it of only on way to toilet and grab a drink.

If it goes for GPU atm 1070 will be enough for whats on the market. I think ill sell 980ti and get 1070 due to lower frame rendering latency.

Now i lost interest in any normal games could not care if its not VR...

Que? Think you've been in the rift a fair bit then.

well I tend to always buy the strongest card of each generation so I wouldn't go for the 1070 or 1080

If I had limited money I would maybe prioritize VR rather than rendering performance, but then again everyone uses computers differently and you might like to do something that benefits greatly from using multiple 4K monitors or having lots of CUDA cores or VRAM

beany_bot honest best think iw spend money on in years. And i do buy some useless stuff. Btw i also got Vive in home
vive.jpg

Vive is gathering dust as theer is not much of a Real games on it. On rift at lest there is Project cars and Elite dangerous.
Room scale ?? I dont care about that. After spending 8 hours walking at work. Running 10km and 1 hour of training 7 days a week. All i want to do is SIT and relax have enough of physical activity as it is.

Overclocked 980ti is managing running elite at 1.5 supersampling mode. But could always use more juice for VR.
