Importing alcohol to UK

Afternoon folks.

So, either I'm a complete idiot (pipe down!), or the rules on importing wine into the UK are purposefully vague.

I want to bring in 1 case (6 btl) - from either Italy or Germany. The shipping is reasonable, the cost of the wine is also pretty good (and almost impossible to get here) yet I don't know how much to add on top of the case/delivery cost to get it to my door.

Anybody have any experience with this?

(All this is assuming my parcel is checked, which it obviously will be, because: hey screw me, right?!).

If you are talking about Duty/VAT charges, there should not be any. Goods from Italy and Germany are in free circulation, there is effectively no "Customs" and nothing to pay.

So essentially the case price + delivery is all that I will pay?

If yes, that's amazing - I can't help but think this has swung my vote in the EU referendum :D

Yes, that's all you'll pay. We're in the EU, it's a free trade area and it's for your own consumption.

Are you using a company to do this? I want to import a case of cider from Ireland that isn't available anywhere else for a friend's birthday as a gift, just got no idea where to start

I'm probably wrong but since it's being delievered I think you need to check that excise duty has been included in the price.

i imagine any legitimate website will include the duty in delivery but if not you'll pay for that (not sure if they'd charge extra for seizing it).

This isnt really too much of a concern, if the EU duty has not been paid due to the site being crooked, and the goods end up getting seized, then your credit card company can simply step in for non delivery of services, no risk :)

Are they used to international orders? I tried to order some wine from a vineyard in France and it was an administrative nightmare for them. I also had the idea of shipping back wine myself - buying it over there, then handing it to DHL / whoever for shipping home - and the courier companies wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

Very good point. I didn't think of that.

How do they define what is "your consumption" Could you bring back a years supply of wine for personal use? 52 bottles say

On the borderforce tv show there was a couple who did not get fined and were allowed to bring in something like 4000 or 5000 cigarettes because they said they smoked 60 a day. The woman looked and sounded like she smoked 600 a day!

Easily. The personal allowance is 96 litres. And bringing back more is no problem if you can show it's for personal use.

Joking apart, this is what worries me most about the upcoming referendum

This is a big decision, with enormous long term implications and consequences (whatever the result)

And yet, there will be people out there (not necessarily you I might add ;) ) who will actually be basing their decision entirely on whether or not they can get cheap booze from Italy! (Or whatever)

:(

Equally worrying on the other side - people out there not even knowing the advantages being Europe brings, like free trade (cheap booze from Italy).

That almost covers a week in a student house! :D

3 of us got through 48 litres of frosty jack cidre in 2 weeks somehow. A mate did a promotion and it was going out of date so got it for free. That stuff is nasty, i don't even know how it had a best before date
