I wanted to know peoples experiences with selling their car privately and the best websites to do so? Are the packages Autotrader give decent value? £56 for their premium package, is this actually worth it? I've just placed my car on Gumtree as it's free, eBay experiences?

Thanks

Pistonheads is free and it's how I sold the last car I sold. Especially if your car has a modicum of petrolhead interest about it.

For cheaper (a few grand) cars, ebay is normally my go-to. If its more expensive I'd go with AT. Cant hurt to chuck it on FB, gumtree and pistonheads for free - just watch out for scammers on gumtree

Pistonheads is dreadful.

I tried it because it was cheaper, one interest. Put on autotrader and it sold in a couple of weeks...

It was a reasonably PH car as well (Mini JCW)

Had my old Micra on Friday-Ad, Gumtree, eBay and Facebook.

Got the sale (and most interest) off Gumtree. A few scammers too though:

1) "I'm deaf and housebound, but want to buy the car for my friend. I can make payment through PayPal and arrange for a courier to pick up today"

2) "I work on an oil rig so can;t come see the car. I want to buy it for my son though and will give you the asking price today via PayPal and arrange for it to be shipped."

Spot the similarity! Just go for cash deal and you're pretty much set as long as you get a signature on your V5C.

The scams on gumtree normally start with a text saying "I'm interested in the car, can you email me at ........". First time I thought it was odd but emailed them and it was the usual Paypal scam so just ignored the texts after that

Which package did you opt for?

Honestly can't remember but I think it was just the standard advert for £12 which, in reality, was a waste of £12 as it got me one viewings and a couple of time wasters in a month.

Autotrader just was a much better place with lots of queries, several viewings and a buyer in about a week.

Had my car on gumtree and literally all I got were scammers. Will not be posting on their in future.

As Ian said AT is good for slightly higher value cars but Facebook is proving very popular, especially around here.

The scammers did start with the email texts. I also had a few trade sellers contact me who were London based. I guess I got lucky as a guy wanted the car for his daughter who just turned 18 :) Just waiting on my New Maz 3 fastback to arrive at the dealership now.

Belloni,

What car are you wanting to sell etc? Guess that will decide the best platform.

BMW 116i f20 - 2011 plate.

Sold a mk2 mx5 that needed a bit of work, on piston heads. AT seemed rather ludicrously priced. Obviously for a more expensive car it wouldn't make much difference I guess as its 'only' 50 quid or whatever. But still, got it sold on PH for less cost.

Tried all of them over time.

Ebay classifieds ad, straight ad no "make offer" option because if you accept then more fees to pay.

Great exposure, generally fast sales if priced right and no meither. Cheap too.
