GTX 1080 (Which one) or wait for AMD to show?

Yep. Way I see it is, you can get the cheapest 1070 now, save yourself £300 or so over a 1080. Then sell the 1070 in 6-9 months time when vega/1080Ti is out netting a good £200 there. That makes £500 saved, add ~£200 and get a gpu offering a huge boost in performance.
1070 to 1080 gap is not that much in performance. Where as you can be sure there will be a big gap between a 1080 and 1080Ti/Vega.
14nm will shine once used on a big chip with hbm 2 and leave people drooling :D
That's the thing, I always tell myself "this card will last until the next gen" and it never does. I've yet to own a card more than a year but since I will be going glass tubing this time I do "need" one that will last unless the next one is "plug & play" (Same position for watercooling ports) as I don't want to have to redo all the tubing again :)

You can do two things. Just stick with a normal 1070/Polaris for now and do your glass tubing when the big boys are released or just go 1080 now as that is the best there is now.

My perception is the 1080 performance is still like what 28nm chip released now would offer.

The only reason I would say do the former is because we have not seen the boost this new node has to bring yet. When that big boost kicks in with the new cards, you may be left feeling bad.

Hope this helps. Whatever you decide, enjoy ;)

Why is it that rational thinking is never what you want to here ;)

Unless you need to I would hold off to see what AMD bring out In the next month. No point upgrading until you see all options and it's imminent.

Wait till July/August and the dust has settled. Most of the 1080's will be out by then, other cards may appear amd the 980ti aint gonna last at the same price as a 1080 for long. No one in their right mind is going to buy a 980ti for £500 when you can get the 1080 for about the same price.

Wait.

Critically all the reviews will be in and you can make some decent decisions on factors like noise and critically issues like coil whine etc. Will have reared their head and been addressed.

I'm waiting to see the following:

1. What the custom cooler 1070s cost and how their performance compares to my 290 for both 1080 and 1440 gamer.

2. How much the cost of custom cooler 1080s drop once the 1080TIs appear.

3. The price/performance this year's AMD cards.

I think the 1080 price is too rich for what it is. The 1070 is going to be £200 cheaper across the board and looks good for 1080p or 1440p.

I would be worried paying near £600 for a good custom 1080 as i strongly suspect the 1070 and 1080 prices will plummet once vega and gp102 come out. The 1070 will obviously take less of a painful hit.

This talk happens every new release. If AMD can't compete, these cards will stay at the top for a while. Nvidia isn't going to cannibalize their cards with their next release.

Given that AMD appear to be replacing their own cards again, I expect the 1070 and 1080 will get a reasonably good run. Let's not forget that the next release of NVidia cards may beat them by 15% in FPS, but that only matters if your 1080 actually needed that extra FPS. These cards are going to be good for a few years.

You can wait forever chasing that 15% increment. Sooner or later you just have to accept that you are buying a new card every 3-5 years and just buying what ever is the best at that time.

True but it depends how long I have to wait :(

I wish I could wait that long but July/August I planned to have the system finalised by then :(

It depends how long I have to wait, I have about two weeks before I'm going to go mad over this :)

Quick question, would a 980ti be better at around £300 to put me on till the next gen?

I would just pay the extra £20-30 and get a 1070 instead to be honest. Brand new card, same performance, more vram, consumes less electricity, runs cooler, better at vr and will only mature and get better with driver release.

980Ti second hand would be good for £250 or under considering the above.

Hi everyone, last year I was on the look for a new GPU to replace my R9 290X, well the 290X is gone now so I'm on the look again and at what seems like a good time now that GTX 1080 is launched. I'm planning on watercooling so the cooler on the card is not a big issue but I was hoping I could get some advice (No fan boy wars) over what would be the best option. Do I:

A- Get a GTX 1080 now
B- Wait for Polaris (Small) and decide then

Hopefully you will be able to help me in this as I'm stumped for the time being and with the cost I would prefer not to make the wrong decision :)

Until AMD release the Vega they're unlikely to release a card with enough power to challenge the 1080. There are some rumours they'll release the Vega in October though.

Personally I'm going for a 1080 in August.

Lowest I've seen 980TI currently is £300 so it looks like I'll have to wait for the GTX1080 price to decrease or the GTX 1070 to be released :(

I'd wait at least until mid June for all the custom card reviews to come in and availability, then decide.
I suppose I'll have to wait a little bit longer :(

Hopefully the price will have dropped by then

Okay, sorry to bring up an older thread but I didn't want to create a new one.
So after seeing the GTX 1070 today with the cheapest at £365 I'm now lost as to what to do. Do I just get the GTX 1080 KFA card at £525 or should I pick up a 980TI and wait for AMD to get off their backsides and show to the party.
