Equallogic & Powervault storage

I'm thinking of getting a Dell Equallogic PS5000 or Powervault MD1000 2nd hand for a few 100 quid. This seems too good to be true. is there anything I should be aware of? Do I need to buy a license to run the software?

ATM I use Freenas and ZFS seems more flexible then RAID?

I'll be using it as an ESXI datastore. Will ISCSI be fast enough?

Isn't an MD1000 just an expansion array, so needs to hang off a SAS/SCSI card or other "head-end"?

PS5000 would be more than adequate for ESXi.

Just be aware of running costs...

You mean in terms of power consumption? I'm running a home cockpit anyway, so it shouldn't make a big dent in the costs!

If you want to attach it via SAS then get the Dell SAS shelf.
