On the road....
My other halfs son has Destiny for his XBOX one, he's badgering her for something called "The Taken King" saying he needs this DLC to progress to rank 40.

Is this right? I've looked on the XBOX store thingy and this DLC seems to be £39.99 (which strikes me as a lot given we bought Destiny from CEX for £8!)

I'm assuming he cba to work through the game to achieve rank 40 and a school friend has told him buying the Taken King is a shortcut to this rank, he says he needs to be on rank 40 to get better weapons and equipment etc.

Can a Destiny player help me out with this please? - I'm into PC's rather than consoles.

Thanks. :)

yup, destiny is pretty limited without the dlc, which is why the original base game is now so cheap.

With each dlc/expansion it raised the level cap and added content that's only possible with that dlc. The daily/weekly missions also usually changed to require the new expansion too, resulting in less and less of the previous version of the game even accessible. Helpfully, I think I remember you needing the previous 2 dlc to work - so just buying the Taken King dlc isn't enough, as it needs Expansion 1 (Dark Below) and Expansion 2 (house of wolves) to work - you can't be surprised at their desire for $$$.

Being realistic, the cheapest way for you is to avoid the DLC pack from the store and look for the disc of "The Taken King Legendary Edition" which includes EVERYTHING including the base game, the 2 earlier dlc and the Taken King. This is effectively the min requirements to play the full game and once it was released the original base game was pretty much only a demo and thus a lot got rid of them at CEX/ebay. Looking on eBay it's about £25 for the Xbox One version.

I've just had a look on the Xbox store and it now suggests that expansion 1 & 2 are now included with the DLC as they're no longer available separately, so it should work fine with just that. But at £40 it's still cheaper to find the disc version from somewhere.

Excellent, thank you for that , I understand a lot more now, I'll check CEX.

Money grabbing developers!!!

Ps, thanks also from his mum who's been pulling her hair out over this! :D

I think MMOs tend to have a similar setup - there's a base game with its content and level cap. As soon as a DLC/expansion comes out, the level cap has increased and a load of new content requiring that new higher level (thus making the old "top" equipment being redundant). After a while another DLC comes out with the same principle, rinse and repeat...

To get access to the new content and use the new gear you need to be of the level only achievable with the dlc... Because the new dlc uses some maps/content provided by the earlier dlc, it needs them all to be complete.

I would guess it's the same principle with WoW and it's addons? If you installed the original WoW from however many years ago, I'd guess you probably can't do much if you want to play with others that do have all the content.

Be careful buying second hand. IIRC, the main Destiny 1.0 game is the stuff that's on the disc but everything else is a code to download. So you could easily buy the pack and find the codes have been used.

Aye mate don't buy from cex...

The dlc I is redeemable codes, one use only.
New copy only for this type of thing.

Mind you make sure he redeems all the choices asap as they also have expiry dates.

TTK is definitely worth buying though unfortunately. Without the new expansion there would be hardly anything to do! Sell the old one as you say and buy a new copy of TTK is the best thing to do here

Bought Destiny Legendary edition today for his Xbox one, it comes with a code for the DLC's , can he enter the code to his existing game (which is Destiny stand alone) or is he best to delete it and start again with the new install? - which he's not bothered about replaying it tbh.

Got it from Game for £29.99 which I was pleased with.

Thanks.

Just add the code and he can continue with his current character, :)

Went with the option of uninstalling the old copy and installing the new, thankfully though it recognised his account / profile and he still has his old progress so all good.

Happy lad, happy step dad. :)
