Crackling noises, PC turning off

Title really, it's very random and hasn't happened for nearly a week. The first time it did it I took my PC apart and removed every inch of dust from every component and it was fine after. It made crackling noises a little while after that but didn't cause any issues, but googling it I found that having a PC case on carpet is apparently a bad idea, so I propped it up on wood.

Then about 10 minutes ago the crackling noise randomly happened again and my PC restarted itself. It sounds like a PSU issue and I've taken the side of the case off to see if I can see anything the next time it does it. Thing is it might never do it again for a few weeks.

Anyone got any ideas? It's pretty scary.

EDIT: The crackling comes from inside the PC itself, not from speakers.

Is the power cable inserted OK?
Normally you get crackling when inserting the cable and it's turned on, might be a slight disconnect or the socket is broken.

What PSU do you have?

Sounds like the power cable is loose. Make sure the power lead is pushed firmly into the socket on the back of the PSU.

PSU is 650W OCZ ZS series, the cord is firmly plugged in but it is possible the cable could be knackered, its been bent ever so slightly for like 4 years, so there could be a fault.

Silly question but can you buy new cords easily? Hope I don't have to go hunting for a specific one for the model, it looks generic enough.

They're generic.
