AMD's answer to NVLink?

Well, not really AMD's answer, but the entire industries'. It seems it's NVIDIA doing their own thing again, and keeping themselves out of the industry standards.

As far as I recall IBM were going to be implementing NV-Link, although it seem they're also going to work on an industry standard interconnect now. Should be interesting to see what happens.
 
This is a replacement for PCIe, nvlink is a short term solution - and high cost - for HPC

NVLink will probably continue to evolve alonside other solutions as HPC's requirements will always be higher than desktop

It's more like a hypertransport replacement. It's certainly not AMD's answer to NVlink, which is literally just built on top of pci-e. IBM have previously made their own connection that was built on pci-e but ran at higher power and a little faster. NVLink is much more like an extension to PCI-e and V2 of what IBM had already done. It's got absolutely zero place in consumer applications. Bigger connections cost more power(In 99% of cases), there is no need for the bandwidth, hardware or cost for 4-8 gpus to talk to each other, the cpu and system memory that fast for gaming.

You wouldn't put something like NVLink in a consumer PC, increasing power usage for everyone to give the 0.0001% of gamers with 3-4 way sli/xfire a 1% boost is nonsensical. It's there for extremely high end servers and nothing else.
