Let's say that by some miracle we leave the EU, what happens to all the EU nationals living here?

As someone on a Dutch passport and happily stealing yer jerbs I don't really want to leave. Someone at work reckons that I'll be able to stay, but once I leave for a holiday or whatever, I'll need to jump through the hoops to get back in.

So, what is it? Anyone know?

I don't think anyones actually worked out the finer points of anything yet so who knows!

Well this just in from the remain camp:

Remain said:
All EU nationals working in the UK will be put to death as a sacrifice to the Klingons who are right now in orbit awaiting a UK exit

Pretty sure it wouldn't impact existing people settled here, just slow/hinder/hamper new immigrants.

Don't worry, you won't be asked to leave on the 24th! :p

Should we leave, it'll take a very long time to sort the whole thing out. Also think that those already here won't have a lot, if much to worry about, it'll certainly effect those entering after the event/controls are in place.

Dirty immigrants will be booted out and we will take our country back.

No we won't. We'll build a camp on the shore where we live. We'll steal all your food and supplies and call the camp "The Jungle".

When Hollywood buys the rights, we'll cash in and drive around in unregistered Bentleys. Maybe we'll have horses and carts too :D

Booting people out would be moronic and the favour would swiftly be returned by other EU nations, so I highly doubt it'd happen. Clamp down would be on future migration, I'd hope.

Surely the most extreme scenario would be encouraging those who aren't in work or supporting themselves to return home if they can't resolve the situation within a certain timeframe but even that seems like it'd be too harsh to sit well with the general population.

The whole thing is a farce. Instead of considering exit there should be pressure to renegotiate terms for all member states. The EU was a great idea but perhaps it's lost its way... It certainly costs to much for a start

Nothing at all will happen until 2 years after we initiate chapter 20. At that time a few things could happen, but the most likely is an automatic granting of some sort of visa for any EU nationals in the UK, and UK nationals in the EU. Those who have been here for 5 years or more at that time will probably just get residency.

Looked into this myself as my wife is Polish. Anyone who's a resident for over 5 years can apply for permanent residence.

I'm also leaning more towards Out in case anybody thinks i'm going to knee jerk vote 'In' based on emotion :D
