Not Knowing much about gaming cards, can anyone tell me if this is any good or is there similar priced ones out there better?.

MSI GeForce GTX 970 GAMING Twin Frozr V 4GB GDDR5 Dual DVI HDMI DisplayPort PCI-E Graphics Card

i'm building a gaming PC for my son so i'm on a budget of around £1200, but that's to include everything, so the 1070 is possibly out of my price range, but thanks for the reply.

With a budget of £1200 I dont think a £330 card is out of your price range unless the other components you are planning on buying are way overpriced!

Pretty sure you can build a decent PC for the £900 sub GPU thats left ! ;)

:) okay so now we are down to about £700.......

best thing you can do is post in Gen Hardware with your budget and your spec and people will come up with a build for you @ £1200. You can have a look through them and pick and choose. I bet there will be at least a £300 GPU in there.

Just to give you an idea check this

Swapout the GPU for a cheaper one eg 1070 change CPU for the I5 Skylake and add monitor, keyboard, mouse, easy.

That looks Pretty good and ive been looking at the i5 6600k though not sure i need the K..

As a current owner of the GTX 970 twin frozr I can tell you it's an excellent card that will manage all games at 1080p on high settings.

However, I would imagine you are looking for a card that not only performs well but will future proof your system, which means the 970 is outdated, especially as the new 1070 is coming out soon.

As the others have mentioned, posting in gen hardware is the best way forward, or you can always take a look at OCUK build your own PC section.

The other option you have is to take a look at OCUK's (and other companies such as Arbico) pre built PC's.

Hope you get the build you are looking for :)

If its just for gaming then an i5 is plenty, i7 complete overkill. The K variant is worth it for the small amount extra with a mild overclock, 4.4ghz should be no problem, but it depends if you are interested in doing that or not :)

And again to echo what others have said, if you can wait a couple weeks a GTX1070 would be a good choice in your price range. The 1080 is very fast but overpriced.

The Pc is just for gaming and the odd bit of school work, he has a ps4 but wants to get into Pc gaming.

You'll be able to build a quite nice gaming PC here in a month's time for a good deal less than £1200(you could still do so now, but you'll get more bang-for-buck if you wait).

If you wouldn't mind saving some money:

AMD RX 480 8GB version
i5 6600k
Hyper Evo 212 CPU cooler
nothing special motherboard
nothing special RAM
nothing special case
nothing special PSU
Simple 1080p/60hz IPS monitor
basic keyboard/mouse

You'd be saving hundreds. And when I say 'nothing special', I dont mean some no-name, bottom tier stuff, just nothing.......special. Decent, proven, yet reasonably-priced products.

A GTX1070 would surely be nicer, but at 1080p, the benefits will be pretty small.

Just something to think about.

A budget of £1200 is high and should definitely be aiming to include a 1070.

Your son can connect his PC to his PS4 TV which I assume is a 1080p screen. You can then buy a simple 1920x1080 monitor for his desktop work - these are very cheap these days.

If you want to spend less than £1200 then you can wait a month and see if AMD offer anything decent. If you are happy with £1,200, you can happily buy the 1070 with the knowledge that it will be faster than anything that comes out in the next month (probably considerably so), and will last long time at 1080p.

Pair this with an i5 processor and you will have a very powerful computer that will last many years.

If your not brand inflicted go with amd so you can buy a cheap 100 quid freesync monitor or the 200 quid one if so inclined. As a option of course. As a rx480 with a freesync mon would be tempting for less money than nvidia gsync monitors which cost a lot more as well as their cards. But saying that i think u get what u pay for with nvidia.

But like i said, options.

If you're looking at GTX970's then your best bet will be to get one 2nd hand. It's a buyers market now the 1070 is set to come out.

This^

I have the MSI Frozer 970 and it's an excellent card for 1080p gaming. Absolutely no interest in upgrading to the 1070.

Lot's of 970s around right now, and for about half what the 1070 would cost you (plus no need the wait, suffer the price gouging, etc. ;))
