I have had a Octavia (57 Plate) VRS Diesel for the past couple of years and to be honest its been brilliant but the last few months its cost me an arm and a leg to keep roadworthy - 150k miles, and I have a feeling there's a few things more just around the corner, clutch etc.

I'm looking at getting something 2-3 years old around the £10-11k mark and wanted something similar in performance to the VRS, just not a fan of the face lift model and the new MK3 is way out of my price range.

I do about 15-20k miles per year.

I have seen a few A3 S-Line diesels that are quite eye catching but looking at all options?

You are not going to get a 2-3 year old A3 for £10-11k. These will all be current model cars and are rather more than that.

I'd not want to do 20k a year in an a3, but I wouldn't fancy it in an Octavia VRS either. Your age requirements are at odds with your budget but I'd probably have a skoda superb and forego some of the performance

Yep unless you struggle to park it there's no downside to the larger car but for a mile muncher the longer wheelbase, bigger seats etc all make it a much better tool for the job

You seem to like VAG cars so how about something like a Seat Exeo? A friend of mine had one for a while, it was very comfy and very nippy, Maybe a bit too big for you thinking about it.

That 60k mile auto superb estate looks like an awful lot of car for the cash. I've only ever been in the back but they're very comfortable.

I have been in a Superb and the space in them is brilliant but not exactly the best looking car. I'm not sure why I want a smaller car to be honest I probably don't so I think I can ignore that part.

Something like the Leon FR is my sort of thing just maybe a touch loud in that green.

**Update**

Well what a difference a week or so makes.

Had some news this week that work will be moving and this will be a considerable amount closer to home. Looking like <30 miles round trip a day.

This also leads to having a little bit more cash available so looking unto 14k now.

I was thinking of just upgrading my Octavia and getting a new shape VRS but I'm not sure if I need a diesel anymore 150 miles a week in a petrol is hardly going to break the bank.

I was thinking about what I really wanted and I don't think that size is actually an issue so I think I have broaden my horizon's so to think. My better half wants me to go test drive a Mazda 6 but I have no experience on that particular car. They look quite nice but not sure how nippy they are going to be?
