Need something stunning - 1080p IPS

Morning all,

I don't need anything with 144Hz as my setup restricts me to 60Hz (long story, amp and HDMI splitter etc).

I just want the best looking screen possible.

I was going to go 1440p 27" but I've got a mini tower build and only room for the current single 980 ti. Which I won't be upgrading until the 1080 ti comes out.

Seeing as a single 980 ti can't get a solid 60fps in most of the top end games I play, I'll stick to 1080p for a couple more years (doesn't bother me).

But, my current monitor is an absolute arse to look at. Horrible cheap thing. So, I'm wondering what suggestions people have, 24" and above ideally. 1080p and most importantly, IPS. I'm not one to fuss over input lag as I mostly play with controller. Only games like Overwatch and BF with mouse and keyboard and my current monitor with a 12ms input lag doesn't phase me in the slightest.

So yea! Any suggestions?
 
Considered a 24" Dell ultrasharp? The 1200p flavour is the same vertical height as a 27" 1440p, and you'll struggle to find better colour reproduction :)

Witcher 3 averages 55fps, Crysis 3 40fps, 55fps in Dragons Age Inquisition... My main pet hate when gaming is not getting a constant 60fps, it drives me insane.

So, going 1440p will bring in more headaches than it will cure I think.

You might want to look at gsync/freesync then, as this should massively reduce the perceived fps drop when it can't quite keep up with 60 :)

...although I'm not sure if that's going to work with your cabling setup. Is the splitter definitely necessary over mirroring your desktop?
 
Hmmm, good suggestions, but I constantly see people having headaches with wide screens like that. Surely it's not worth the hassle?

Headaches? I have an X34 myself (same 21:9 ratio) and it's amazing. Could never go back to 16:9 now, it's the future as far as I'm concerned. No hassle whatsoever, on the contrary! :)

In short, my PC outputs to 2 'displays'. One is a DVI to my monitor, the other is HDMI to my amp. There is a splitter after the amp but ultimately, it's locked to 60Hz 1080p. Which is absolutely fine as my plasma is only 1080p anyway and the PC is smart enough to pick up the 1080p res when I turn the TV on. So 1440p when at the desk would be no issue.

My main issue is I like to start a game, crank it to max (all be it, dial in AA if need be) and make sure it never dips below 60fps. I'm not really sure on the freesync stuff, never seen it. So not overly sold by it. The game would still feel choppy no? At least compared to 60fps.

Will a 980 ti really last another 2 years at 1440p? Sure I could probably play most games fine but I just dropped £600 on this card, last thing I want to do is start cranking graphical settings down just to push for 60fps.
 
Freesync won't work on an Nvidia card anyway, so you won't get any benefit from it. Unfortunately there's no G-Sync monitor that fits your criteria, so you are somewhat limited when you want 60Hz IPS 1080p.

It is quite unlikely a 980Ti will last 2 years at 1440p, unless you start dropping detail etc. It's a very competent card, but as we all know games will only become more demanding and 2 years is a LONG time in this world.

Is it over clocked ? Can easily boost performance by 15%

The thing is that 55fps on a 60hz vsync screen is not 55fps. The monitor can only serve you 1 image per 60th of a second regardless of what you feed it, so you get several sequential frames with 1/60th timings, then two frames that are identical because the GPU hasn't got the next one ready. You're effectively dipping to 30fps every Nth frame.

With the new syncs however, 55fps from the GPU means the monitor shows 55fps, resulting in a much smoother experience. A dip to 55 will be pretty undetectable vs a drop to 30, which may be perceived as a stutter.

In theory, anyway, I haven't had a chance to try it myself - but there's a lot of people on these forums who now swear by g/freesync and I'd recommend reading up on them if you're sensitive to framerates :)
 
Update on research and comments here.

I'm reaching past 1080p, it's old and I want something sexy. If I'm going to stick to 1080p I might as well stick with my current monitor.

So, I'm torn between

ASUS ROG Swift PG279Q
Acer Predator X34

Both look spectacular.
