GTX 1080 (Which one) or wait for AMD to show?

My 290x just let go, getting glitches watching video, artifacts in games and windows, with seeing the 1070 prices decided to bite the bullet and should have an EVGA 1080 arriving tomorrow.

It was a good card, and its replacement is pretty much paid for by the 970sli I returned in the 3.5Gb gate any how.

I'm thinking on similar lines (1070 prices suck) but I don't want to spend a limb on the GTX 1080 and find AMD trance them later this year but I don't want to wait as I need something now and AMD have been a let down so many times in the past :(

Okay, sorry to bring up an older thread but I didn't want to create a new one.
So after seeing the GTX 1070 today with the cheapest at £365 I'm now lost as to what to do. Do I just get the GTX 1080 KFA card at £525 or should I pick up a 980TI and wait for AMD to get off their backsides and show to the party.

If you get a 980ti now it will already be faster than what AMD have coming in the next couple of months

Well my 1080 isn't coming after all, the store says in stock, but they're not so cancelled the order. Worst case if my card stops being usable completely then I've got a 7950 lying round for now and will just have to wait it out until availability settles. 4k with a 7950 /cry.

Are you sure it will be faster than a 490/X as I'm not going for the 480 GPU as it doesn't have enough power for what I'll be using it for :)

Nothing has been confirmed regarding a 490 - it's all pure speculation. An AMD rival to the 1070/1080 could end up being the Vega next year.

My advice is get the best you can afford now.

Supply and demand is going to maintain the 1080 prices so if you are thinking of getting one and can afford it then just go for it now. If supply continues to be an issue we could even see a price increase.

I'm not really following the AMD release, but unless it's an absolute killer GPU it will be hard pressed to affect the prices of the current 10 series cards.

The time between 980 and 980ti was about 9-10 months with a Titan release in between I think. So waiting for a 10 series ti just doesn't sound like a wise move.

Damn, that sucks. Any reason on stock as this seems to be a recurring issue now

That's what I thought unless someone has found how to go into the future :D

You're probably right, better get my wallet ready :)

you have to consider the time value of money too. Its all well and good keeping your money until the 'right' GPU comes along, but then you've had months without a decent GPU. And as soon as you buy one, there will be a better one coming along down the road.

If you buy a 1080 now, sure they'll probably drop £100 in 6-8 months when the 1080ti comes out. but you'll have been using it for those 6-8 months in the meantime.

Yeah, at least I can get my use out of it until the next "Latest and greatest" makes its way along :)

Their reason was the one displayed on their site is EoL - the EVGA Gaming 1080 and they can't change how the their own website displays it (I kid you not) so they added a confusing available the 17th to the title. Even though the card is EoL. They tried 'up' selling to the FE version but tbh I would rather just buy the FTW and be done. So with nothing making any sense just cancelled the order with them.

Now to either sit in a pre-order queue for how ever long it takes or just ignore everything for a few weeks and see how the market pans out. No further forward than I was when the 1080 launched :D.

The very reason I will never buy a Gsync or free sync monitor. I'm not voluntarily locking myself into buying a specific GPU brand. Lol.
I'm getting a Freesync monitor mainly because the G-Sync variant is £1000 (Ha, no chance) :D

How is a GTX 1080 already EOL? Also, good choice on the FTW as apparently EVGA have great support/RMA procedures :)

We dont know what chip the 490X will be based on yet, if its polaris 10 based then yes a 980ti with a half decent overclock will still be faster, if the 490X is Vega then it wont be out in the next couple of months
