Ok done a new build today and its the first time ive actually been a little nervous and dreadful that id have to RMA.

I installed 2 x 8gb ram corsair vengeance 3000mhz kit.
into dim slot A2- B2 ... No post.
A1 - B1 - no post...

1 stick in A1 or B1 seem to work and both 16gb in A1 - B1

So ive reinstalled windows now using 16gb in a1-a2 but i think this isnt dual chan mode.

Im guessing somethign is faulty Is there some kind of checker software i can run to see that the ports are working but not populated?

Im new to Z170 does this sound normal...
Im not 100% sure why i got another asus board my last one was a little quirky too.

Any benchtest i can run to make sure this ram is ok as it is ? Ill memtest them but im 99% sure its the mobo or CPU ??? at fault? Can bent CPU socket pins cause this kind of problem. Im kinda worried its been damaged during installation. I did set the cpu in the wrong way round until i checked 30s later.:p

BIOS upto date.

Dirty ram slots.

Bent cpu socket pins.

Overtightened cooler cause PCB to bend.

Did you tighten anything down while you had the CPU in the wrong way round? For example, did you lower the locking plate and secure the lever?

No I didn't thank god. I suspect there's a few bent pins though after reading similar symptoms from other clumsy idiots like me.

I'll take a picture if it's not too horrible and embarrassing.

Well if it doesn't work its been a 130 quid learning experience. Not the end of the world but so freaking stupid.

I just saw the asus install tool actually sits on the cpu undrr the metal clip.... good god I read those diagrams for 5 mins 10 times and I still fudged it.

Such a noob.

Ah mate sounds like a headache but we all learn by our mistakes.

I've recently built my first build and I keep waiting to find out I've ballsed something up. I didn't electrocute myself so that's always a positive

This is my 50th or so that is the shame of it lol

Too late to do fine work now but I'll fix it in the morning

Oh Jesus just seen your post count as well. In that case I'm a very lucky boy. Maybe the whole relaxed nature of it got the better of you.

I spent the whole time sweating and triple checking every tiny detail haha

Well to be fair, that install tool isn't very intuitive and the Asus manual isn't as clear as it might be, not by a long way. Because the diagrams seemed a bit ambiguous (to me anyway) I decided not to use the install tool when I installed my 6700k into the Asus Z170 Pro Gaming and dropped the CPU in by hand. But I did check I'd got the orientation right multiple times before committing to the lever .... nervous moments :)

If you didn't tighten the lever you may not have done any damage and your problem may lie elsewhere. Only way you'll know for sure is by removing the CPU of course, which is a pain. Hope it's good news.

Haha. Well stripped it down and yes a few bent pins. Very luckily on the very inside rows and "easily" acessable

I actually got the Gf to bend them back in the general location as 2 of them were mashed beyond words. My sausage fingers would have struggled.

It now posts with dual chan. Ram at least I don't think there's anymore problems but time will tell.

Now to oc the **** out of it and watch the ram catastrophically fail cos of terrible contacts :p

**update... reinstalled windows again cos it was freaking out. and so far so good
