How much longer will a 4770K @ 4.4Ghz remain a viable CPU for gaming?

Hi everyone,

I understand that no-one has a crystal ball, but I was wondering how long you think my 4770K at 4.4Ghz should be OK for gaming (1440/60p) if I were to keep upgrading the GPU every year or two. The GPU upgrades would be xx80ti (or equivalent should the naming convention change).

Basically, how long does it take for a current top-end GPU to become bottle-necked by the CPU in more of a nutshell :-)

The way its looking, it'll last until Intel move away from Silicon or games become heavily multithreaded. So 4+ years basically.

Years I am still happily playing on a DO revision i7 920.
Absolutely no issues with gaming.
It launched about 7.5 years ago.

look at the consoles life that often gives you the answer. id say 3 years atleast with a decent gpu you will be fine.

I personally believe in the last 5 years GPUs are the bottleneck in gaming.

I have a 3rd gen i5 clocked at 4.2 Ghz, which is far from the fastest, but there is nothing I do that taxes it.

A long time yet. I have no plans to get rid of my 4670k anytime soon and even if I did there is nothing worthwhile upgrading to, especially considering what it would cost just for a few extra fps.

Great question. There isn't one unified idea yet, but carbon nanotubes show a lot of promise.

Unless something new gets released from the chipset point of view that you really must have on a new mobo, then I'd say the 4770k will last for many years to come.
