Red Hot Chili Peppers

It's... very different, I'll say that! Certainly a completely new direction for them and I wouldn't be able to pair it with anything else they've done. Massive Danger Mouse influences and he appears to have moved them away from the typical rocky sound they usually have going on. A bit soft with the pianos and stuff.

It sounds completely devoid of guitar work. If you compare it with the previous album, there are far less catchy guitar riffs and hardly any solos. Josh might as well have not turned up. I just don't understand why he'd limit himself, especially when he's always being compared with the absolute guitar god before him. You'd think he'd go crazy on it, which I'm sure he's more than capable of doing.

Only heard it once though so will come back in 20 more listens.

Edit: Hmm, jumped the gun a bit there. I was tired when I listened to it at like 5am. It is still pretty rocky to be fair. :p

I'll ha e to check this out. My taste seem to be going more pop now a days.

The californication album can't be beaten. Like 75% of it. The other 2 I've had I can only pick 1 or 2 songs.

Hmm not that keen on "We Turn Red" to be honest...

I've liked the other two songs though! Looking forward to hearing the full album tomorrow :D

Okay so I've been listening to the album all day...

I'm really enjoying "Goodbye Angels" - Very cool song (See below @16:04)

But apart from that, it's sounding a lot more tame than I thought it would be... I'll let it grow on me though - I didn't really like I'm With You at first either, but now I love it.

This new one sounds good. :)

RHCP have always seemed like a bit of a mixed bag to me... I like a fair few of their songs, but I don't think most are anything special. A few are just plain awful.

The outro to Sir Psycho Sexy is just the best thing ever. He is a god.

Since listening to the new album, I decided to go back and listen to their older stuff and it just blows this new album away, it's not a bad album but it's got some weak songs on it and it does not come close to their earlier stuff personally.

All their early work is funky mayhem and it rocks. I love the heavy funky bass lines.

Californication was their one and only brickwalled album. They've all be fine since then so that certainly won't be a worry.

Stadium arcadium CD release was all over the place as well. Right now i'm listening to Can't stop (on By The Way) and its pushed so hard the vocals are distorted. Most of the CD releases post-BSSM are poorly mastered.

It was trash.

BSSM is a masterpiece imo - not a single bad track, and the best album they will ever make.

Only listened once through so far. Not entirely sure, but I never ever am for at least a week.

I liked I'm With You a lot more than most others, and to me this album sounds quite like that still on first listen. This is quite possibly an opinion to be revised though.

Go Robot and The Getaway my favourites so far, but extremely early days.

Josh's guitar playing is a very interesting one. I think he's just shy essentially. He's minimalistic, and I can see Flea easily dominating the creative process in that sense and Josh not wanting to rock the boat. I once read his playing described as 'textured', which I think is perfect. His style is understated but very considered and well placed. I wish he would be a bit more expressive though, a few more solos would be nice. He was quiet on I'm With You which I thought he'd get over by now.

More listening required.

It's definitely growing on me as I thought it would! Goodbye Angels is still my favourite, but I'm even starting to like "We Turn Red" which I didn't like at all on first listen!
