looking for a warm weather rain jacket.
i want it to be thinly lined so i can wear a fleece under if necessary/unnecessary

my work colleague has a nice mammut one. but she got it at a discount.

100ish is what id like to spend less if i get something decent

i dont want one of those really crispy ones thats noisy if you get me.

seems to be a lot of branding words around jackets, so its hard to just google and know what you are getting

For me, walking in the summer rain in a coat means sweating, so I just carry a brolly.

This.

I've yet to find a waterproof jacket that isn't the equivalent of surrounding yourself in a thick duvet.

For camping it's ok, but for day to day a brolly or just a normal jacket and walk faster or drive is the answer!

Buffalo is the answer to every outdoor jacket question: http://www.buffalosystems.co.uk/products/

You just need a shell with a thin pile, so something like this: http://www.buffalosystems.co.uk/products/teclite-shirt/ or this: http://www.buffalosystems.co.uk/products/fell-jacket-2/

While they are nice jackets, they are not waterproof. What's the point?! Also Pertex/pile is not the best for summer, especially with no vents or anything like that.

I've found jackets with the NeoShell membrane to be fairly breathable and I sweat far less in them than in GoreTex but I'd still be pretty hot in the summer. Although if it's that warm, you probably don't need a waterproof! Most of the time in the summer I'll just be out in a softshell if it's raining.

NeoShell is more like a softshell type fabric too, far less like a crisp packet than GoreTex!

Pertex is waterproof. I wore the Mountain Shirt for 6 months in the mountains around Sarajevo while deployed on Op Resolute in 1996. It's waterproof.

And I said he just needs a shell. The ones linked have a thin pile layer, but they sell just the shells.

Pertex (and therefore most Buffalo products) is NOT waterproof, though it is windproof. It is water resistant and water will fall off it readily, but if you're in a major rain for more than a few mins it will start to saturate and you will get wet. It will keep you warm though and dry very quickly, which is probably why you'd think it was waterproof, but it's quite simply not.

Buffalo make good products, but not really ideal for the op imo - they are quite hot so not really what I'd consider suitable for summer, plus most of the better ones (like the Mountain Shirt) work best against bare skin which can make for awkward changing moments when you get to the pub after a bit of a hike.

dbmzk1 is correct. I have a lovely lightweight RAB shell that is pertex and it is only good for a light shower. I really like it however as it is so light, windproof and combined with base a base layer or fleece I stay extremely warm, I do run hot though, and it does dry very quickly. If you need 100% waterproof forget it though.

For proper rain I just use a gortex lined shell and use layers underneath to adjust my temperature. I pretty much face the fact that as I get hot quite easily I'm always going to sweat a little in a fully waterproof shell however I use a close fitting base layer to wick the sweat away and don't really notice it. When the rain stops I remove my outer shell to cool off.

I've struggled with finding something good for warmer weather :S for winter use I have a parka that is both decently breathable and can go for hours in a complete deluge and just shrug it off but none of the summer jackets seem to use the same kind of outer shell for some reason.

At the moment making do with an M65 jacket, treated with a spray to increase water resistance and without the thermal liner but it wouldn't stand upto all day trekking in more than a moderate shower.

I've had a Berghaus shell for about 10 years from Go Outdoors, still water resistant and decent in warm weather

Combined with a fleece in winter it keeps me warm too but these days its relegated to emergency use only and lives in the boot of the car

Correct if talking about non waterproof Pertex products.

I stand corrected. I didn't realise Pertex now have waterproof solutions. My RAB jacket with it in is a few years old now and sadly isn't 100% waterproof. I wish it was as that'd make it perfect.

I will say OP that the jackets that feel stiff / crinkly when new don't stay like that forever. They do soften up with use.
