The hate for traffic wardens

If it's anything like my area, the residents have to pay to get a permit, if they don't it's impossible to park within 500m of their house, "residents parking" is just another cash cow for the local council. If it was true residents parking we would all be getting permits or the choice of whether the area should be residents parking.

Nah, council doesn't charge him anything.

If I was going to be sceptical I'd suggest that maybe there's a good reason those markings haven't been repainted......surely not? :D

It's worth a look. I've got 14 days to appeal (or pay the £35 fine), if I do challenge and it is rejected, I am given another 14 days to pay the reduced fine. If there's clearly no chance of winning, I'll skip out on the getting rejected part. :p

If nothing else I may learn a some law/regulations/guidelines and to check EVERY nook and cranny when parking. :D

If there's definitely no penalty to worry about when appealing then why not?
Good luck to you if you decide to have a punt. You're admittedly a new driver and this wasn't done deliberately it was just a case of you missed the details in the matrix.
All part of life's learning curve :)
