I'm getting my bathroom done at the moment and in my design have got a wood counter top, separate wood wall mounted vanity unit. I've got the vanity unit and today went to buy the counter top from local businesses - I ended up buying a single plank of walnut but the colour isn't an exact match. It's a completely untreated freshly planed plank as far as I know.

Can anyone recommend anyway of staining this plank to match the tone of the vanity unit. Here's a picture... The new plank is on the right, the vanity unit is on the left.

As above, and therefore I personally wouldn't try and match. A slight mismatch in colours will look bad/erroneous whereas a completely different colour (white for example) will just look like a choice.

If you can't take it back and swap for a darker piece of American walnut your best bet is to get some water based walnut stain. You can get it in a concentrated formula that then allows you to lighten and darken the finish depending how much water you add. Also if it looks a bit too dark you can even sponge the timber with a damp sponge to take some off. You could experiment in an area that wont be seen if possible.

Also be aware that adding a finish on top of the bare timber/stained timber will darken it further. The first thing you should do is to just dampen the timber with a rag and that should give you a basic idea of what it'll look like once a finish has been applied.
