Quick question, on the EVGA products website there are currently two different model numbers for the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti CLASSIFIED GAMING ACX 2.0+ cards one is almost a $100 cheaper.. The question is what is the difference and why is one cheaper than the other ?

Also what does REF mean on the box art for the cheaper one as the other one does not have that on it.

Reason I ask, I have been trying to find a second EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti CLASSIFIED GAMING ACX 2.0+ to SLI and realised I seem to have the more expensive model currently and has Samsung VRAM on mine and I have heard some other cards seem to have SK Hynix VRAM is that why some are cheaper ?

As you see below I took a screenshot of the site showing the two different model numbers.

I also did a bit more research and seems you have many more model numbers for the EVGA GeForce GTX 980 Ti CLASSIFIED GAMING ACX 2.0+ and some even having slightly different specifications as you will see below in that screenshot.

Anyone have a clue about the REF thing on the box art ? It's clearly not a reference card so not reference, but I did think does it mean refurbished and that may explain why it is cheaper ?

Cheaper model box art as you will see it says REF on the box :-

More expensive model box art as you will see REF is not on the box:-

How can they possibly sell a Classy with a reference board? The whole point of the Classy is it IS a custom board with uprated power delivery and components.

Refurbished sounds like the most likely reason. A Classified is a Classified, unless it's a Kingpin but other than that there's always only been one version. Okay with say the 580 I think there were Classified blower versions as well as fan cards (This is before ACX) but in this situation it must mean refurbished.

Almost forgot Hydro-copper.

Post #11 from EVGA forum MOD.

Seems whilst it was binned for classified it couldnt hold the boost clocks so they downgraded it keeping the cooler/components but dont guarantee the classified base/boost clocks and only gurantee it to run at reference clocks.

Wow, That's pretty sad, A Classified that can't maintain it's boost clock, I'd pay the extra so it does what it say's on the tin personally.

Only sad so long as you know that's what the ref stands for. You still have the high end components and cooler like the classified, but a guaranteed poor overclocked.

I bet many a ref classified is bought without knowing this esp second hand. I didn't know this until today. You learn something new every day

It's sad that it even exists, may as well get a reference card and put some tinfoil on it, cheapens that classified name imo.
