Hi, my motherboard has failed it's a msi z77 gd65 the code im getting is 4f which i read somewhere meens northbridge failed to initialise.

I have tested different power suply and tried just using 1 stick of ram and tried resetting bios nothing helped.

The motherboard is 3.5 years old so just out of warranty im wondering is there anyway of me fixing it? Or would msi fix it for reasonable price.

Or do I need to bin it and buy a replacement?

Thanks

It died slowly over the last few months. Sometimes it wouldn't boot first time and you would have to switch it off at plug and reboot, then couple of months later it got to the point it would need turning off at the plug and retrying 2-3 times every time it was switched on.

Last week it was like 10 attempts and this week couldn't get it to boot at all.

I have created a ticket with msi yesterday not heard yet.

I got the motherboard out the case today was hoping there might be something obvious like a blown cap but couldn't see any.

So today I flicked the bios switch and it booted?

Can someone explain this to me. I have tried reseting bios and this didnt work at all. This problem has been getting worse and worse for months to the point it wouldn't turn on. I tried stripping it all down testing parts and reseting bios nothing worked.

Then i flick bios switch and it boots first time. Why would it do this?

I believe it has a dual bios so if one fails the other will work, sort of a back up bios.

Yeah my Gigabyte board has that so if one BIOS gets corrupted with a bad flash or powercut the good one can copy itself onto the bad one, has helped me once or twice. I believe that you probably have a bad BIOS chip on the board so when you switch it, it goes onto the good BIOS chip.

Well I put the whole pc back together come downstairs to start playing and it's completely stopped working.

It clicks to turn to then instant turns off.

Im pretty sure its dead now, tried taking out individual parts and any combination on either bios it just clicks to come on then instant turns off.

Try taking out the mobo battery and leaving it for a while. Also you says its a Northbridge error, did you check the cooler on the chipset? It might have been knocked and is hanging off or summat.

This motherboard is killing me.

Right now situation is

Bios A: completely dead no boot just clicks and turns off. Tried every possible reset method multiple times.

Bios B: boots up but hangs with a0 on led

Update: I finally got it in the bios. I been trying for hours and finally making progress. What was holding me back was the B bios was incompatible with my graphics card. You would think easy solution take the card out and run off onboard hdmi, well crazy thing is the onboard is incompatible with the tv that I always use. So for hours I been trying to get it to boot not knowing onboard is incompatible with the tv. I only switched screens so I can watch game of thrones at 2am on my main tv and bios was there.

Its been so stressful I tried ram in every slot, ssd in different sata, multiple graphics cards, multiple resets.

So right now im booted up in bios only have 1 stick of ram in there and no hard drives. Should simply be a matter of plugging in my ssd booting in to windows downloading latest bios flashing them and reinstalling my gpu and ram.

Fully working perfectly now on B bios :)

I had actually damaged a hdmi lead at some point during testing which was adding to problems after I switched to B.

A side is gone.

Its probably corrupted, if ya have tried reflashing bios 0 and it still doesnt work then just leave it on B like you have done.

I bought some replacement bioses for my gigabyte z77 but they were a pain to solder on, especially since i only have a normal soldering iron, its one of them jobs that requires 4 hands so ya end up holding stuff in your mouth :), if ya have one of them fancy soldering gun things then its probably a piece of cake.

Cool thanks for the tip never knew that was an option. If this bios ever fails I will attempt a solder before bin it.
