Final spec - gone a little over budget :-)

What CAD/CAM system are you going to be using?

I use SolidWorks so I can give you an idea of what I use:

Xeon E5-1650v2 (roughly equivalent to a 5820K)
32GB RAM
Quadro K2000 2GB
240GB SSD (C Drive)
1TB Bulk Storage HDD
2 x Dell U2412M 1920x1200 IPS monitors

This is overkill for just about anything other than heavy rendering and FEA simulations.

Our RAM is ECC RAM, but that's because this Xeon-based Dell Workstation came with it.

no gaming just CAD / CAM (Altium, Pro E, Solid works) along with some fairly heavy duty FFT and video compression / decompression in real time.

So looking for raw CPU with lots of cores.

Not sure about the video card but for the price seems like an easy way to drive up to 4 screens should the need arise.

You can save a large chunk of money by dropping the massively overspecced psu. You can comfortably run that pc off a quality 550w unit even with overclocking. Any of these will be more than enough:-

My basket at Overclockers UK:

The EVGA and XFX are both Seasonic built units. The Superflower has bright white led's where you plug the cables in and cannot be turned off.

The Superflower however seems to be the most reliable of PSU's at least in my experience and comes with a massive warranty and excellent customer service!

Thanks for the PSU - I did think I had over killed, but given I want reliability and long life I didn't want to stress the PSU.

What about the amount of memory ? Is 64GB over kill ? I was thinking with 6 cores and 12 threads more memory must be beneficial.

TBH, 64GB is overkill unless you're going to be doing serious FEA analysis. My workstation has barely used 16GB out of 32GB when I fully maxed out the CPU doing stress simulations. If you can afford it though, 64GB isn't going to hurt. Having not done any FFT work, I don't know how RAM-dependent it is.

Pasty is right, a good 550W PSU is all you need. Any of his 3 suggestions are a good choice. I'd also add the Antec Truepower Classic 550W to that list if you don't want a modular PSU.

Video card-wise, if you're serious about CAD/CAM (and aren't just playing with it) I'd suggest a workstation-class card. The Quadro K620 or FirePro W4100 are entry-level and affordable, but don't have as many shader cores. The Quadro K2200 and FirePro W5100 are more expensive but have more shaders and VRAM.

Here is some cheaper Ram. You can add another kit if you decide to stay with 64GB.

The Antec cooler will perform better than the H60 if you can fit a 240mm cooler in your case.

Also if you are fine with a smaller boot SSD then maybe go with the Samsung 950 PRO or ask when the SM961 is due for release.

The Intel 750 was/is pretty slow at booting up although it is a good workstation SSD. Something to do with the pcie initialization.

A combination of the above plus I found I already had a suitable PSU - just hope it all fits and works !

yeah - just realized that when I looked on line at the handbook, phew.

So I edited my post as I now need to check my legacy psu has the right connectors on it.

Been a while (2009) since I built a PC from scratch and things have moved on a bit !

Just noticed you went with TN Freesync monitors. Would IPS panels not have been a better choice for CAD/CAM work ?

I have a choice of three PSU's

1. Antec Phantom Pro 800w
2. Ultra xPro 600W
3. Cooler Master Silent pro 600W

Will probably got for #3 - unless anyone has a better idea ?

As for choice of monitor - I use this PC mostly for ham radio stuff, HPSDR, WebSDR,, DATV etc along with CAD work.

So I figure was always going to be a compromise.

Currently running a pair of HP LP2465's with about 50,000 hours back light use on them !
