Hi all,

I need to get a new car for my wife and looking for some opinions please. Now ideally she would like to get a Fiat 500 in the horrible wishy washy green or cream, however I can't fit my fishing stuff in it so I think something a bit bigger :D

She is starting placements for uni so will be travelling around 50 miles each day.

Being a girl, it can't be 'ugly' - subjective I know, and no Focus'. I was thinking an astra or something like that maybe? I have seen this one - http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201606185042095/usedcars?logcode=visc

What a strange set of requirements. Why don't you tell her to find her own car if she is going to rule out what I'd consider the best option (Focus) for her budget for pointless reasons?

How long are the placements for? Is the 50 miles a day commute likely to continue?

If it's going to be for a considerable amount of time I'd suggest something a little comfier than a small hatchback.

Focus isn't a looks issue - her sister was involved in an accident in a Focus which ripped it in half and left her nephew brain damaged. Whilst I understand it has a good safety rating and any other car would've ended up the same, the family now have an aversion to the Focus.

The placements are for 6 months, and she has 2 left to do. She's always driven bigger cars and wants something smaller - one reason being the small spaces in the car park at the hospital.

Can 500's even be had for that money?

A fiesta mk7 perhaps.
Just about -

50 miles a day? Is everyone reading that as 50 miles each way or something? That's 25 miles each way, it's a half hour journey. Not exactly a 2 hour slog of a commute

yup! car + commuting into london is not a thing I'd like to be doing! hence the cycling which can be a pain but I enjoy it most of the time.

I did just over 80 miles a day in a suzuki swift sport with 2 passengers for 2 years no problems

an Astra would be plentiful roomy/comfortable. Are you all frail old men with back problems or something?

They are all too spoilt with their mercs and bmw's :p

Op, you say something smaller, are medium sized hatchbacks about as small as she'll go? a fiat 500 is particularly small, would something like a fiesta still be too small? as that would be bigger than a 500.
