Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

I've put my original post back, i didnt wana start the hype train again LoL But im now interested in Humbugs numbers from it all.. i shall sleep now and see how things pan out in the morning :D

yeah summat is wrong there, the score is normally effected by a smaller percentage than the actual overclock. Must be summat else on ya system messing it up.

I duno man, only difference is 800 stock core clock is running on newer drivers and newer Windows 10 OS. Physics score is basically the same within margin using same 2700K at 4.5Ghz, RAM is the same, SSD the same, even same Mobo LoL

Anyway im off to sleep o/

Do people really reckon it'll be a 1440p 60fps card?
I guess AMD marketing does say beyond HD for the rx 480.

Well the 390x is 1440p 60fps in all but a few games. The notion that a rx 480 that is between a 390x and 980 that may be overclockable would be able to handle that region is not unfathomable. The 1070 would probably just be more future proof in that case.

I'm certainly hoping that's what it'll hit. I don't mind turning settings down to something like medium/high, though, which I know a lot of people aren't happy to do, but if that's the case then this probably isn't the card for them.

I'm considering 2 RX480s for 1440p Eyefinity but wanting more info on Vega before I commit.

I'd probably be going with overclockable partner cards with 8gb, this is months away however so I'll have a definitive idea on performance by this point.

The lack of DVI is a massive derp moment for this GPU imo - considering it's intended audience.

can always pick AIB card, AMD said they have DVI on the pcb, beside even the ones that wont have will probably ship with a DVI adapter, hardly an issue.

DVI should've died years ago.

It can't really die when there are still a significant percentage of people still using them.

NVIDIA included DVI on their 1080 and 1070 - for obvious reasons. I think AMD should have included them on a mid range card such as the 480, as people buying these are even more likely to be using older DVI 60Hz monitors.

Or in my case 120hz 3d DVI-D. Remember when AMD had a 3d push? Lol
The HDMI input on the monitor is 60hz only and has input lag so converting to DVI is quite important to me.

Logic dictates a lot of people buying £200 cards dont have the money around to buy a screen for no real reason.

Bingo, my screens work perfectly 5 years on. I'd like a new one but can't really justify the expense when the current ones are fine. Maybe if I was a hardcore fps player or hard a big wad of cash burning a hole in my pocket but I'd rather take my wife on holiday than buy a new monitor right now.

well most of these ppl will have a free adapter included with the cards.
and the minority with 3D high refresh, high rez DVI monitors, will still be able to get, 480 from AIB that adds a dvi-d to their model.

Exactly. No reason to change your display if you're happy. A quality panel is still a quality panel, especially those older 1600ps.

Moreover, DVI just works, plain and simple. I never recall a single issue with it whereas HDMI and DP have been plagued with flickering, wake issues etc. It's a shame AMD decided to remove considering this bracket is most likely to use it.

The more and more I read this thread, the more I am pushed towards a 1070. It's probably too much to expect the 480 to handle 3440x1440 comfortably.

I'm gonna wait either way, as it may surprise with it's oc potential.

It launched at 650, which was too much. Many thought that 4g vram wasnt enough for the top end card. And there were issues with pump whine on the early cards.

I hope you mean dollars and not pounds. Fury X was £520 on release but even then it was easily beaten by 980Ti.

What is muddying the water is the price of the 390 and 390x. These cards are available for around £210/£260, which seems to be the price range for the new 8GB 480 cards.

What people tend to forget is that the 390x and 390 have been reduced in price a lot since launch. And considering that these cards were basically just rebadged 290x/290's that were released in 2013. So the price comparison isn't really a fair one.

Not true at all in regards to R9 390. Right from release it was around £240 (or less) for the cheaper models (still custom cooled). I have linked this before but just so anyone claiming R9 390 has dropped in price since release fail to get the message. Also remember there was no such thing as a reference R9 390, they are all custom cooled editions.

XFX R9 390 - avg price since release = £235
http://pricespy.co.uk/product.php?pu=3196888

Sapphire R9 390 Nitro with backplate - avg price £257
http://pricespy.co.uk/product.php?pu=3400452

Gigabyte R9 390 G1 Gaming edition - avg price £252
http://pricespy.co.uk/product.php?pu=3196981

So 8GB RX 480 simply must beat R9 390 8GB price perfromance by a large margin, or it will be a case of AMD releasing a GPU with the same performance and same price as an AMD GPU we could purchase over a year ago.

EDIT: I should point out that I believe RX 480 will be = or > R9 390X performance. I believe the leaked benches showing less 390/970 type performance (or less) are innacurate.
