The EU Referendum: Polling Day

I can't wait until this is all over, it's been an absolute drain to watch the people of this country tear themselves apart over this. Some of the bickering, insults and simmering anger has been so frustrating to watch. I'll be voting remain because of many reasons but mainly because on a broad level I think humanity should be working together, not segregating further.

I drive a lot and I've seen VOTE LEAVE plastered all over the streets and very little people claiming they are voting remain. All the passion and vitriol I have experienced has come from the Leave side of the fence. Pretty much any post about it on social media has been dominated by people spewing hatred. My own brother-in-law got so angry when he brought up the subject with me and my wife he had to walk out of the room. So much hatred and focus on immigration and people have so little understanding of just how many facets of our daily life that the EU has had input into and in most cases (not all) has improved.

I understand we need improved immigration controls, but I don't want them at the sacrifice of the benefits of the rest of the EU membership, it would be cutting off our borders to spite our national face.

Whatever the outcome is, and I hope we continue in the EU personally, I hope this doesn't cause violence or riots. I'll just be happy to see the pure vitriol subside after today hopefully.

I disagree with almost all of that. I don't share your utopian view.

And I've got to say that I agree with almost all of that. Its crazy how opinions differ so greatly.

interestingly

I am 34

from conversations / social media posts etc (so completely unscientifically)

most people I know older than me are voting out
almost everyone I know my age is voting in
most people I know younger than me are unsure either way

perhaps this shows that older people remember "pre EU" UK
my generation were brought up during a time when Europe very positive wasn't so much of a controversial topic
younger people have seen the good (easy travel to Europe) and the bad (2007 recession/ Migrant crisis etc)

I'm 36 and think you might well be right.

I fear you're right... but I'm just fed up with it now. No matter what happens we will have other challenges to deal with tomorrow, but at least we will know where we stand.

I think the poll should have been done with a years notice, its at least as important as the election.

But i agree, whatever poll result the deal with EU is ongoing anyhow. Im not of the mind this was UK's last chance to leave like a states secession

If you think it'll go away with a close vote, you've got another thing coming. The rage will be real.

Agreed, the only thing that will heal the division will be the winners listening to the concerns of the losers - but that doesn't seem to be the way in modern politics :(

Whats with the idiots using the #usepens on twitter. How can people be this stupid?

Would it not be just easier and faster to just print and prepare hundreds of thousands of fake votes beforehand, than using a rubber and pencil on the day to change the vote?

How stupid are people...Seems to be only coming from the insecure leavers as well...

Older people... we want the country that we had as children.
Middle people... we want the country we were promised by politicians as children.
Younger people... we've seen the good and the bad and realise there isn't a black or white answer.

It is pretty laughable.

Just depends how much of a sore loser you are I guess
Never understood the mentallity to think you can "lose" on a personal level in a referendum. This isn't a game for Gaben's sake. It's a political vote.

If the country democratically votes to go against your opinion that's how the cookie crumbles. You only lose if you don't vote at all.

That's because they're worried :D so they should be.

Might as well just spoil their ballot. Oh wait they already have.

A lot of older people at my polling station complaining that it was too far away. I agree.

Bookies still strongly favour a remain win. They are rarely wrong, and people are usually afraid change anyhow. That being said, if you always do what you've always done, you always get what you've always gotten. So far that's a fat bumbling excessive Europe, and I'm a pro European.

What I'd like to see is more democracy in this country. Not quite Swiss style, but something not far off.

You ain't seen nothing yet

I remember hearing something similar if there was a close vote in the Scottish referendum. Apparently we were going to see riots and violence breakout.

I think it was forgotten in about 2-3 days. I think it will be a similar case here, remain will win (unfortunately) by a close margin and people will complain on social media for a few days until it fizzles out and some other world event becomes the next hot topic

You mean like when football teams lose and some supporters lose their **** like someones just crapped on their own mother?

Stupid will always stupid.
