I don't play a lot of games these days (unlike when I had a c64 at a kid) but I'm considering upgrading my somewhat aging 6950.

As I've got a 1440p screen now (though mostly for video and photo stuff) it would be nice to take advantage of the higher res rather than playing on one of my lower res screens either side of it.

I vaguely recall reading that having more memory is helpful the higher the resolution you are using.

So would I be (generally) better off getting a higher spec card with 4gig of memory, or a slightly slower card with 8gig of memory? Or is it going to be the typical answer of it depends what you are playing?

I've been keeping an eye on the rx480 thread which seems to mostly be full of posts about not the rx480, hopefully it's both powerful enough to use at 1440p and not too much over £200...

Wait a week. At your budget, the 480 has the potential to be a great card, although don't expect to fully max out settings at 1440P

It's looking like the 480 will be your best bet, I'm have a 290 and play at 1440p. Yes you have to turn a few things down but the games are still pretty enough to not be distracting so you can just get on and enjoy the game.

Even if its "only" matches a 390/970 it will still be newer tech that should last longer.

Looking like it runs with low power draw and temperatures which is a bonus after the last lot of AMD cards.

I wouldn't recommend a 480 if you like to play the latest games with good settings(not necessarily max, though) at 60fps.

980Ti/1070 should be minimum for 1440p/60fps.

Well I can always play in a window at 1080 if need be (like I did with GTA5) and the only big title I can see coming out is the next worms game. ;]
If it was me, I'd prefer to upscale from 1080p. Outside some rare exceptions, full screen gaming is where it's at.

An 8gb 480 would be enough, provided you're not aiming to play AAA games at 60fps. For that, you'd want a 1070 or 980ti, like Seanspeed said, but they're not exactly budget friendly cards...

As others have said, hold fire for now. Even if the 480 doesn't fit the bill, it may positively impact pricing of other GPUs.

As I'm on a budget I have a Freesync XR34 and a second hand Fury X which works very nicely I have to really push the graphics (ENB, DoF, all bells and whistles) on Skyrim to drop below 60fps. Don't have any newer games to try it on but might see how it handles TW3 soon. If you're not on a budget a 980ti/X34 would be my prefered option as its a bit faster.

Just bought a 1440p 144hz freesync screen, running a 290 and mainly playing Division, D3, Grim Dawn, ESO and WoW, really only the Division taxes my setup to the point of i have had to look at OC'ing my GPU and lowering settings...

Either i sit tight for now and play on lower visuals to keep the frames decent in Division (the other games run just fine) or i buy a new card or potentially a 2nd 290, although ive heard Xfire in Division is broken at the moment?

Doesnt seem the 480 ref cards will be a worthwhile upgrade, so im waiting to see what the Aftermarket cooled and clocked ones come along like, and if they are also weak, i will just wait it out for Vega i guess, unless i spot a 2nd hand FuryX or Fury on the cheap then i would prob just get one for now to pass the time.

Been running 1440p since release of BenQ XL2730Z with a single 290 and I been shocked just how well it runs games. Fair enough not fully maxed out, mainly msaa off and other odd setting from ultra to high that you can not tell the difference between them.

What I trying to say is you don't need highest GPU to enjoy 1440p if you tweak the correct setting that do not offer any better IQ but offer great frames.

When you get your card and out it through its paces I'd be really interested to know what sort of settings you have to use to get 60fps at 1440p Gregster.

Not sure if you've got it but particularly interested in Witcher 3.

I really don't think you need more than 4gb at 1440p to be honest. Maybe if you're cranking everything to maximum with AA but then the 480 probably isn't powerful enough for that anyway.

My 780 with 3gb does ok at 1440p.

It's going to be much cheaper to get the 8gb now than in the future when you might find out you need it and your only option is to sell the card and then buy a new one.

480 will be alright for 1440p, just can't frivolously max every slider. Truth is that if you don't mind messing with settings you can get 60 fps in most games even with a 390.
