Long Haul - Emirates/Etihad/Qatar/Turkish

I flew that route with Etihad. Would do it again. Everything was fine. Nothing to rant and rave about it, it's still a really long flight and being stuck in any plane for that length of time isn't fun!

I can go direct with Thai for about £500 but it means getting a coach to Heathrow - no major trauma admittedly.

Think I have done 15 flights to Bangkok, Direct is worth it for an extra few bucks, at £500 it's a no brainer. Get a coach for 4 hours just to have a direct flight here :)

British Airways. Give me a rickety old 747 any day of the week.

Funny you say that. I just flew BA's new 787 Dreamliner, in economy, to Kuala Lumpar and back. Worst economy seats / cabin I've ever flown in. I found the seats very uncomfy and more cramped than econ cabins in Singapore's A380 and 777, Cathay's 747 and Malaysian Airlines A380. Must say Cathay's seats did recline a little peculiarly.

I checked on seat guru and BA and Virgin both use 31" seat pitch in Econ compared to the Asian airlines who use 32". Such a shame as the service from BA I find good however I'd choose a different airline purely based on the fact I do not want to sit in a BA econ cabin no long haul again.

which airline?

I found econ on A380 with emirates to be superb

Flown on the A380 twice, once with Lufthansa, Singapore to Frankfurt, and again with BA, Singapore to Heathrow. While the BA flight was pretty good, Lufthansa was just awful. They've fitted their 380's with these dreadful narrow-profile Recaro seats, and after 13 hours and despite numerous breaks to get up and move around, my spine was in tatters on arrival at Frankfurt.

Seriously, the seats on the 23 year old 737-500 that took me from Frankfurt to Manchester were palatial in comparison to their 380 seats.

I have used Emirates a few times when flying to Australia highly recommend them. My cousin flys regular with Ethihad and he prefers them over Emirates and Qatar air.

I find them all to be pretty much on a par with each other so generally just opt for the best mix of timings and price.

Of course it means that my airmiles are all over the place.

I forgot to come back to this post at the time, but in the end I took your advice and booked a direct flight with Thai.

Really impressed - on the outbound leg I had an Airbus A380 - I was on the top deck right at the back in a window seat.
I had ample leg room, ample elbow room thanks to the storage bins on the top deck, and overall it was a completely pleasant and enjoyable trip - the pink and purple cabin sounds lurid but it's all very mellow in real life with some lovely ambient lighting. Great service and food too.

On the return leg the service and food was equally good, but this time it was on a Boeing 777 which felt quite poor compared to the A380 - noisier, more takeoff vibration, lighting not so good. Still had plenty of legroom and a window seat.

I would 100% fly Thai again, after speaking to other travellers who'd taken indirect flights I'm definitely not going indirect for a journey like this if I can help it.

I just came off a Etihad flight, 2 legs on a A380 and 2 legs on some a smaller airliner.

The food and service was fantastic, I fly into Asia a lot so given a choice I economy I always take Etihad and in business both Etihad and Emirates are very close but I still like Etihad more.

Maybe I will try Thai next time.

I flew with Qatar for the same trip and it was great, A380 both ways at reasonable times meant that jetlag was not really an issue. Biggest annoyance on the outward journey was the lack of staff checking people in but it was early.
