Radeon RX 480 "Polaris" Launched at $199

In addition to that the unimpressive performance in the recent leaks.

I don't care whether a GPU is £200 or £600 - i care that i feel i'm getting something good for something the money.

If the 480 turns out like suspected, it leaves Nvidia as my option... Only option i'd consider with them is 1080.

it is not even running on proper drivers yet. wait for the proper reviews considering review sites have just been sent proper drivers for the cards.

Surely if you don't care about cost just get the fastest one then from the get go. A 1080 will absolutely demolish the 480.

Then why are you even considered a mid range $200 GPU? What did you think it would take on the 3 times more expensive 1080?

Was the 1500MHZ an out of the box clock or a possible clock, that is important.

again we don't know :D we do know Sapphire confirmed 1500mhz was possible....

will that be possible on ref again don't know but 1400 wouldn't be a stretch at all for 480 to hit...1500 I think possibly could be a stretch to hit on ref.......these are the big unknowns.....

also don't know what voltage will need to hit these clocks; 1500 could be extremely easy to hit.....or might need a little extra voltage to hit :D

but I do know 5.8 TFLOP card can't be slower than 5.1 TFLOP card; or least shouldn't be with proper drivers :D

It's not that the cost doesn't matter....

I don't care whether a GPU costs £200 or £600 - Providing it represents value to me, so it's not the amount that inhibits my purchase. Although i do need / want a new GPU.

If the 480 was going to between Nano and Fury as WCCFTech suggested and could be OC'd to within 5% of a stock 980Ti - i'd of waited... But the recent leaks suggest it's anything but...

So faced with the prospect of waiting a week, 480 coming out, being disappointed and it costing more than it should... I went for a EVGA 1080 SC Gaming ACX while i could at a price (sub £580) before the EU referendum result further impacted that.

Carney has done a good job with steadying things with Bank of England - we've seen most of the markets recover - and I've been watching pound all day and once it recovered from 1.32 it quickly went back up 1.36. Its been bouncing between 1.36 and 1.37 all day. Its not going to drop any farther; but will slowly climb back up to at least 1.40 over the next few days.

*also talked with one of my older brothers' who's got his master's in finance who pretty much agrees with that*

Many leading firms disagree who've got more than one guy with a degree. You could be right, but it's very far from a certain thing.

Feels like it's taking forever to reach the 29th, to see if it's good bad or indifferent!

Yeah, not many feel this way or understand this. But I feel the very same way. I got the money, but I want what I perceive to be value for my money!

I got a MSI R9 290 well over a year ago on members market for £135 which was great value to me. Then I got a XFX Radeon 295x2 for £330 I think it was, which served me very well. I got to play all the games I wanted at 4K, like Crysis 3, Tomb Raider etc which worked perfectly with xfire. But after I was done with my back catalogue of what I wanted to play and new games came out which did not support crossfire for month's after release, I got annoyed with it and sold it for a very nice profit.

As a matter of fact I could add £70 on top of what I got for my 295x2 and buy a cheap 1080. But I won't, because the 1080 does not represent value to to me, as I was expecting more from 14/16nm and feel that 1080Ti and Vega will be at least 50% more powerful than the 1080 and not cost a lot more.

Anyway, rambling on now. But I was hoping the 480 would represent good value for me until Vega comes out. Then it would go in my partners PC. But as time goes by, I am not so sure.

what the same firms that didn't see the crash coming......yea - problem with all the forecasts - they are supposed to worst case and best case; then they are supposed to ave through and that should be what happens. They didn't do that; they just did pretty much worst case - without the balance of best case.....

They also said pound should have dropped below 1.30......it didn't it actually rallied even before what was said by the Bank of England - if you look around; different financial pubs; they've adjusted what they said - most say it won't dip below 1.30 now and should steady out easily to 1.36-137. With possibility of climbing back to 1.40ish after alittle while.

Nothing has changed - the markets have realized this - and in the end they won't cut off their nose to spite their face.....

Yup, exactly!

To be honest i do question how worth the EVGA 1080 Superclocked is (even after getting one for less than the typical price) but with the volatility at the moment i'd be kicking myself if i later had to pay more.

I really hope AMD nail it with the 480 - but recent leaks just not suggesting so. 390x performance just won't do it - yes it'll be a good card but not a great card.. It's not going to make you stand up and take notice unless it's slightly above the Nano and can get to within 5% of the 980Ti with OC, then it represents something fantastic. If it does turn out to be that great - i'll return or sell the 1080 (Will still get what i paid) and buy a 480... So hedging at the moment.

So no releases of early reviews as was guessed?

Nope....
Although some great info in here on how good a GTX970 or a R390 is, if you fancy one of them?

So the question I have is, if the RX480 sucks (I doubt it will personally) but as we are in a day of shock/horror.
Then gentlemen what is the fastest card today under £300. Also why buy a GTX970 when a GTX980 is not much more but a good deal faster?

still sticking with it will be 980 stock + at 1266; that's in DX11 and at least nano speeds in DX 12

You can't have 5.8 TFLOP card digressing to 970 speeds specially way crimson has gone and have 390 which is 5.1 TFLOPS and now 10% faster than 970......

Where it falls after Overclocked......is the real mystery; specially with aftermarket cards - Sapphire has said 1500mhz was real....but how often is another question :D

Yeah but the 970 is a 3.4 Tflop card. They pretty much match each other max OC to max OC. 1500-1550 vs 11-1200.

The 480 will very likely be a 970/980 performance card. All be it at about £250.

If it does overclock well then it may see the 480 at more toward 980/Ti stock perf.

I thought about it myself. Nearly got a cheap second hand TX at one point, but I thought for a tenner more I can get a brand new 1070. Even considered a cheap 1080 for a brief moment. But let's be honest, early next year Vega with HBM 2 will make these cards look silly and their value will likely tank as they are overpriced as it is.

I have been waiting for a leap in performance from 14/16nm for YEARS. Not going to give in now and get a card that performs like a OC'd 980Ti was my conclusion.

1070 would have been a great card which I would have purchased in an instant had it have been priced under £300 like the 970 was.

This of course if all relative to me and how I feel. I tend to get nearly just as much joy bagging a good deal when buying then I do playing the games :p
