What an utterly sad day.

Grim times are ahead. That is for sure. Farage has already withdrawn some of his statements he used in his brexit campaign.

Good start.

As a foreigner we don't get the full details, mind sharing some of these statements? I'm very interested in this entire situation for personal reasons.

It's no surprise that anything that came out of Farrage's mouth should have been treated with a pinch of salt. He'll never be allowed anywhere near the actual negotiations or post EU government.

As a Dutch person I just want to say - I am surprised how many of you take the 'Nexit referendum' and '712 other countries want to leave' stories seriously.

There has literally been one guy (that nobody likes, he got dragged to court for racism) from one party that said he'd want a referendum if his party ever got into a position of power, of which I can confidently say that it will not happen.

That;s the kind of expert thinking no wants to listen to!

Let us all revel in our ignorance!

Those three things put them into the lose situation. I think there will be a compromise between the first two. I really hope they learn from this before even considering point three.
That's the problem they have. There isn't a good way forward without pain for the EU project and their best bet is to try and put this behind them quickly, without giving anything away to unsettle members and without being too punitive to harm themselves. However the EU have not really shown tact or consideration lately for anything beyond 'the project', and sometimes it seems like a mad rush to reach the end goal before it all falls apart, because the ends will justify the means and people will all realise it is glorious when finished...

I think most would agree they didn't see the Leave camp actually winning. Much like our government didn't really think they would (come close maybe, but not win).

I wish he'd withdraw air from his lungs on a permanent basis. It's either that or the press need to collectively agree to ignore him and that's never happening.

The Dutch news is reporting it as being a major theme in the next election in March 2017. You must not forget that UKIP the party that caused this were not even remotely in power in the UK.

No. Our Prime Minister can take us out single handedly. Then any Act of Parliament can't be fully blocked by the Lords, it can merely be delayed (because of the Parliament Acts). They're not like the EU Parliament who can fully block legislation, veto TTIP, etc... ;-)

ok thanks :(

so we're out out out and out then

at least if the country completely goes to rot we'll know which half - sorry 52% - to blame !

It could in theory be blocked in the commons, the referendum was advisory not legally binding. Its highly unlikely though.
What's the actual process for Article 50, can Cameron rock up Monday morning and post it through the EU letterbox or does he still require parliamentary approval to do so?

It would be outrageous for it not to be a binding vote, unless something really unexpected comes up or the EU totally bends over for us.

Not a pinch, a cellar. A cellar of salt.

It was one of those incredulously stupid posts that sticks in the head, and following your logic across the different threads I had a feeling I'd bump in to you contradicting yourself. You didn't actually address the contradiction though, instead spouted a load of other stuff instead. Nice

How have I contradicted myself?

Does it matter to me if I did? No!

Do I care? No!

Its the internet you know. :p

Can we as a nation now accept our choice and move together as a country without the in fighting and stupid arguments over nothing?

Please, pretty please with a cherry on top. :D

Heh. You never know.

Didn't most think Remain would win with a several point lead? Look how that turned out.

Don't scare me!

But seriously, at this point his party (PVV) has 15 seats out of 150. He'll need a coalition of at least 75 seats to get anything done, but all the other political parties hate his guts. Even if they didn't, the vast majority of people do, so doing business with them would be political suicide.

I am not too worried about it for now. Dutch people tend to be pretty easy on these things. In the west they are very open to all the 'taboo' things (immigrants, exchange students, globalization, etc) while in the east people are sometimes a little more... traditional, but then again they tend to have a lot of common sense and think things through, then do what's best for them in the long run.

We don't tend to just jump straight into stuff like the UK has done here.

didn't see many cheery faces today

wondered if even a lot of those who voted "leave" had wondered quite what they'd done and whether it was the right decision
