Luxury holiday without the pricetag

Sri Lanka, Southern India.

You can do the Maldives cheaper than that just avoid the larger Islands. The best thing about the Maldives is you are trapped on a Island you can walk around in 10mins (avoid the larger Islands which take 20mins)

Be warned its a captive audiance and prices are expensive, worth it though as the beech gets swept every morning :)

Seychelles? Not exactly the cheapest place to go, but it will compare luxury wise to the Maldives for a slightly lower budget.

Already been mentioned by i'd say Railay Bay/beach in krabi, was there a few years back and it was lovely. A nice selection of really cheap all the way to upscale resorts that don't intrude on the natural beauty of the place. It's attached to the land but really feels like a little island due the location.

However you should really consider going to Phu Quoc island in Vietnam. my wife and I went last May for less thsn £2k all in. I've been to Thailand twice, however i'd choose Vietnam over Thailand anytime now.

I imagine that Vietnam is currently how Thailand was just before mass tourism hit it. I could already see signs of major development happening around the island in our short time there so i'd say it's only got a few years before it's really changed.

That Railay beach looks beautiful in Krabi what is the best way to get there and also a decent place to stay?

Thanks for the suggestions everyone keep them coming Vietnam does sound good I have heard good things.

Have to say Phu Quoc Island looks stunning where did you stay plus airlines etc?

We flew with Vietnam Airlines into Ho Chi Minh, you then need to get another domestic flight to Phu Quoc island but it costs peanuts.

We stayed here...

Got a stupidly cheap deal of 10 nights for something like £300 IIRC. We didn't stay in an overly luxurious room but you're not on holiday to sit in the room all day :)

Thanks abit concerning flying on an Asian airline though what with stuff in recent memory. The flying does not bother me but flying with a decent airline does so not sure about this side.

That aside it does look great did you just do the Island or other stuff?

Don't worry about asian airlines, or any airlines for that matter, there have been a few sensationalised incidents in the media, you're more likely to die on the way to work tomorrow.

We just did the island, there's loads to do there. You can be as active or as lazy as you like. However you could always start in Ho Chi Minh for a few days and do mainland activities. While very sobering, i'd recommend Coconut prison, i walked out in tears and these things generally don't get to me. It's barely changed since the US pulled out, very candid photo's on the walls of horrific torture perpetrated by the US soldiers and vietnamese alike.

You've got 18 days, I wouldn't suggest the island for more than a week. Perhaps consider flying into Hanoi and travelling down country over the 18 days and flying out of Ho Chi Minh.

We went to Fiji the year before on our honeymoon, met loads of people and the one place brought up again and again by regular travellers was Vietnam as a place they'd recommend over any other.
