Brexit thread - what happens next

True but that puts British business at a disadvantage over EU competitors and we still have to abide by the rules and regs pertaining to the goods anyway.

Then we impose tariffs.....

Sorry but trade will always happen. The EU don't like the idea as it upsets the great federal plan.

What astounds me with all this 'let's make Britain great' and 'take back control' preaching is that people seem to be under the illusion that it's the EU who are responsible for everything they think is wrong with the country and by somehow leaving it'll all be fixed.

Hmm...

Duh! All countries protect some industries through tariffs. It is to ensure no mass redundancy and economic and social crisis in the country. Most Western countries would never be able to compete against low cost countries for most of their goods.
Are we not seeing the effects of the decisions of a sector of our society that feels ignored, left out?
Total free trade is a delusion.

Theoretically it's the most efficient way of trading. Politically it's problematic due to vested interests. As weeding out uncompetitive industries would initially lead to mass redundancies. Regardless of whether or these people found additional employment (which is highly likely after the transition period), they'd likely hold a grudge against the government, they'd be protests, riots etc.. Still it's doable, but it would it would take a ballsy government to enact it, and one that wouldn't expect/hope to be in power come the next term.

Competition shouldn't be an issue, as it's not like we'd be competing with Brazil for cocoa, or china for plastic tat. We'd be competing in areas we specialise in like high technology, pharmaceuticals, services like insurance etc..

What id does do however is leave the country exposed come wartime. For example if we killed off our steel industry, and bought tariff free steel from China, our raw material prices would be lower, but come a war, we'd potentially not have access to steel. That being said, without EU regulations on energy subsidies and what not, our steel industry would be more competitive.

Probably around 1922 when the empire was at its largest.

By 1992 the Empire was already in decline, the costs of the First World War saw to that. The social effects also of that time also started to end the 'deference' social structure as men who went through WW1 has little respect for the people who claimed to be their 'betters'.
We are actually seeing something similar on the social side now.

JC is a joke, he's destroying what's left of the Labour party.

If they had a decent leader in place before the referendum people actually liked we would never have left the EU.

Who does JC represent? hipsters and communists?

just to be pedantic:

England is part of Great Britain, which also contains Scotland and Wales. The island Great Britain is the largest of the British Isles, hence it is called Great (which originally meant “large”). The nations that make up Great Britain, along with Northern Ireland and various dependencies, make up the United Kingdom.

You are maybe to young to understand what Labour actually is.

Those that are rebelling are nothing more than left wing conservatives.

Blair took labour away from what it means.

I am hoping for a party split a two party system is good for no one.

By prominent business Leave campaigner.

"we will just go back into Europe on our own terms"

Delusional. Europe is not going to let the UK cherry pick what it wants and do whatever Britain says.

Favourite tactic, as seen, in the campaign of rubbishing all expert advice from the IMF etc.

Added nothing, we heard all this throughout the Referendum.

Delusional? I think it's the most likely outcome by a long way. Especially once other countries in the EU hold referendums and vote leave.

Force the EU to sit down with everyone and listen to what they actually want. Either that or the whole EU will dissolve.

Everyone is a winner then, no countries actually leave the EU, they all get better terms, the EU fights on… Remainers remain and leavers get the changes they wanted. Win, win, win.

The old party system is a bit outdated. I don't believe the current big parties really understand the electorate. I'd much prefer to see small more agile parties, more in tune with voters, working together to tackle the big issues. That can't happen whilst it's a ****ing match between lab and cons

well on the plus side the price of copper per KG has shot up due to the brexit, to my delight when I took some bright cable and got £ 100 more than I exptected :D
