Out of curiosity has anyone ever actually worked out what level of NI contributions are needed to actually mean you have "earned" the state pension?

I know it isn't the question but you have to pay for 40 years for full contribution so I believe. It would be interesting to see how much I've put in and then eventually take out.
The vast majority of people I know either die before retirement or die very soon after saving the Government a lot of money. This last 12 months I've been to 10 funerals and they were all under 60.

The UK Gov website gives you some level of detail, https://www.gov.uk/check-state-pension, i can't remember how much detail it goes into though.

You can actually opt out of NI, provided you prove you are putting that money towards a private pension. I plan to do just that as I have no faith in there being any NI pot left in 35 years

And you think that an economy where there are less jobs and things like benefits for the unemployed are being cut is going to make it better for them?

As it was the economy was improving, there were more jobs around and more jobs likely to be created.

If we enter another recession things will get worse, and it's those that are already struggling that will likely find it hitting hardest first, not necessarily those who are already unemployed, but those in low paying jobs.

Yeah it would just be interesting to see what level of conteibution for the 40 years actually breaks even

But our jails are very full at the moment. Where will we put them all?

I predict our prison service will be privatised, super prisons will be built and judges will indeed send more people to prison. The country is draconian enough, in that there are many people who do mostly harmless things that criminalise them.

Maybe that private prison could bung some under handers to a few judges to help give some poor kids (of all colours and races, but mainly the darker shade) stronger sentancing than normal. What with prisoners being worth cash to a company now.

I imagine they might even lobby for harsher sentencing too.
