Was just reading up on Britain's DNA about how a DNA test can give you some idea where your originate from. Has anyone done this, does it not all lead back to Africa some 200,000 years ago or can it somehow give you more accurate lineage of where you come from, i.e, from Africa to the Middle East, to Europe, to Britain etc. Thought it mioght be an interesting experiment.

Its a cool idea, I think the sample levels are too low at the moment to really link things up. I figure whole lineages are not accounted for as they have still not been tested.

Recent research of the UK genetic stock has shown that prior to the 1950's era of mass immigration 75% of our islands genetic heritage could be traced back to the 2,000 to 4,000 hunter gatherers who crossed the land bridge before the sea levels rose 12,000 to 14,000 years ago.

I seem to remember that recently they had shown that even that stock had formed genetic "kingdoms" on clear geographical lines then throw in Celts, Romans, Vikings, Angles, Saxons and Normans you might find some interesting things. But most likely, assuming your white British from a family that has several generations in the same area, most of your heritage will be from those hardy northern European hunter gathers that tamed the land after the last ice age.

Modern DNA is telling us some very interesting things.

My mate did this recently. Cost him £100 to send his spittle to USA.
Came back and he was totally suprised that he wasn't descended from nomads/gypsies from eastern europe. :)

23andMe do a lot of ancestry stuff with their test. It's found me at least 5 new cousins and probably a lot more but I rarely venture to this section, I am all about the raw (SNP) data :D

I wouldn't bother personally, it doesn't mean much to me.

I think the guys testing it would be pretty surprised though, from my great grandparent's generation to mine there are the following full blooded 'races?':

Italian
Filipino
Spanish
Japanese
Swiss

What is funny is that when i was much younger i had much more oriental features and as i grew up, i seemed to gain the look of my other mixed in races.

On my Mothers side we trace back to, Norway but we don't know how far back.

It's something that would be cool to know but I'm not interesting in dropping a chunk of change on it.
