We've been spending £30 a pop for a local chap to cut our back lawn. I now want to do it myself but I need a machine capable. I borrowed my father in laws basic electric mower and it failed miserably. At the time the grass was relatively long and it was a huge effort. I think a petrol mower might be the way forward unless you can recommend a good electric. Any suggestions? Budget wise, I don't really want to spend more than £250.

Ta!

Honda Izy as above...Spend the extra and reap the rewards... Mine is going strong 9 years later. Starts first time and never let me down.

I bought it because someone had one that was over 15 years old and was faultless...

My dad bought one off my own recommendation and cant fault it either

I use them for work (wider model). They last about 12-18 months for me.

I can do anything from 10-30 gardens a day for 7-8 months of the year. So do the maths. They 'could' last forever.

I had a little 32cm Qualcast when we moved house - soon proved to struggle with 2 lawns and a front verge versus 1 small back lawn! Was going to wait to the end of the summer but decided something with more umph was need now, so picked up one of these from Aldi. Suspect there won't be any left in stores now though...

However, I reckon the Aldi mower is one of these Cobra 43cm but in green, not red:

Mine looks identical to that and does a very good job if you don't want a petrol.

I just bought one of these:

for £30 off ebay. It also came with a push version as well. I have 3 small areas of grass though, so a large mower would be no good.

Depending how big your grass is, just get something off gumtree tbh.

If you have a lot of grass, then probably a rotary mower is best. if you want stripes and prettyness, then a cylinder mower is best.

If you have an orchard, get a sit on mower.

I dont know lol.. I'm trying to find the plan I had when I bought the place but I can't find it. It's a reasonable size and its' looking like a jungle out there now. I need to get something ordered.

Well, my lawn is probably about 250 sqm, and I use a petrol mower with a 19" cutting deck - which is about the right size. It's a cheap mower, albeit with a decent Briggs & Stratton engine, and has started to fall to bits after 4 years. I'd follow the Honda recommendations if you can stretch to it - I've heard only good things, including from my neighbour who's a gardener.

For a strimmer, I've got a Stihl FS56, which is brilliant (when the mower was out of action, I used it to cut the whole lawn - did it just as fast as the mower, albeit a bit more ragged). The £100 Titan one from Screwfix is not in the same league, but apparently is competent enough.

Thanks all for your advice.

I decided I needed something asap so I've gone with click and collect from B&Q. I've ordered a Mountfield SP414 Petrol and a Bosch strimmer. The mower gets very good reviews and was on sale so fingers crossed.

Yep only issue i have with the mountfield is having to pull the cord every time i have to take the grassbox off.

Them hayter are very good machines.

If it a Honda hayter or vicking you can't go wrong.

Some cheaper mowers like the mountfield have either there own engine (which will be OK) Honda or brigs. The honda and brigs are much better but the mountfield body's are not the best and will fall apart.

Yes, I'm sure the Hayter and the other model are excellent. But for the time I intend to spend cutting my lawn, I opted for the mountfield sp414. I got £60 off so I thought it was worth a punt. Time will tell won't it. It's peeing with rain so I wont be getting out anytime soon..

Long grass you may want to strimmer the top down then mow.

When cutting lawns it's 1/3 each time.. or you just get stalks and no blades of grass.
