Looking for something decent for around this price tag, currently have a sony kdl42w653a (42 inch 1080p) and the picture on this set is excellent. Looking for something comparable in ~50 inches and 4k.

I was looking at the Sony KD-49X8305C which I have looked at in John Lewis and it looks great.

There's currently a Panasonic TX-55CX400B on offer a Currys too which is obviously bigger but I'm not sure on the quality of the set.

Both seem to have HDMI 2.0 which is also a nice plus.

Looking to see if anyone has any other suggestions before I dive in as there seems to be a lot of choice.

I've been told that for now, at that price point, get an excellent 1080p set (50-55") as opposed to a poor 4K set. So if you're absolutely set on 4K, I'd increase your budget a little, if you can of course?

Why exactly are you upgrading? Is it for more size or for 4k? If it's the latter only I'd hold fire for a few months. There's such little content currently that IMO it's pretty pointless.

You can still pickup the Sony KD49X8005CBU for £499.99.

Good quality, if you don't mind Android TV.

Okay, I'll be thinking of you when I'm watching Marco Polo in 4K later today

I wouldn't call the Sony X83 a poor 4K TV. I do understand what you're saying though.
If not 4K, the Sony W8 55" is usually £599 I believe.
& as above, depends on if you have access to any 4K content. Also depends on how often you like to upgrade your TV.

For the sake of a couple of months and sticking with a TV which offers an "excellent" picture already, there's only one way prices will go. Let's not kid ourselves and think that OLED will suddenly drop to these prices in the next 12 months, but I'm convinced that it's worth waiting at this price point.

OP really needs to decide why they're upgrading.

I was really just looking to go bigger for the main part but figured if I was upgrading I might as well go for 4K while I'm at it and then not need to upgrade again.

I guess I could spend more, but it depends how much more, if you have any suggestions at a higher price point let me know and I can definitely consider it (I don't want to waste my money on a false economy). This is one of the reasons I asked, I figured at this price it would likely be a trade off.

Might be best to wait as others have said.

This is the key point. At just about every price point there will be some advantages and disadvantages, but at the (pretty much) bottom rung you're still trading off image quality and resolution, whereas doubling the budget you need to worry less about that particular compromise.

Makes perfect sense to me, buying a 1080p set right now makes little sense. (in fact I'm trying to sell one, which is proving difficult)

Just make sure you research which ones support HDR for future proofing if you care about this, this for some users is more important.

Check them out in store, they usually have some running demos and others standard TV so it gives you can idea of what to expect.

Ha sorry! I was by no means having a dig at that TV, I don't know enough about it. That statement wasn't aimed at any particular model, just what I was told about that price point from previous threads and when shopping around.

My post was more passing on advice than stating fact

Netflix and most streaming services support 4K, some events are now broadcast in 4K like the Euro's, there are also plenty of UHD blurays available.

Depends on the user, but for me there is more than enough content to warrant owning a 4K set right now. :D
