Scared stiff of flying!!!

If it helps i build these planes.

They are made to impecible standards...by some of us...
Yeah I work with engines & the amount of stuff we scrap because the part is non-conforming by a micron is unreal, standards are extremely high.

People, I am due to go up in an aeroplane twice this year. Now, not flown for approx 20+ years due to extreme fear of flying.

Now, I have to go this year. So, help!

I can't afford to go on a course. I tried alcohol all those years ago and it didn't work! Will a doctor provide any medication if I mention it to him about how I feel about flying?

The first flight is due in May and already my stomach is churning! Flying to Poland. Then, in August I am flying to Rome.

Any advice would be great. Even funny ones! :D Ta

I've been on planes roughly twice a year for the last 10 years and 1 thing I have learned is, Ear plugs.

Close your eyes, Take a deep breath, Relax and go to sleep, You'll be landing before you know it.

Just remember it's fine to have cracks in the structure of the aircraft as long as they've drilled a hole at each end ;)

I can't think of a single plane/helicopter out of the hundreds I've worked on that hasn't had a crack or two (or twenty) stop-drilled somewhere in the airframe :D

Flying is ridiculously safe. I've basically done away with being scared of flying just by looking at the statistics involved.

Well OP has posted since he started this thread two years ago, so chances obviously aren't that high.

Still its nice to see everyone helping out two years after he needed advice :p

You build them all while drunk though, and brush the spare heavy duty bolts that should have been installed 'somnewhere' under the tool chests, and then you use the acid etching machinery for your own personal projects. I know what you do... :p

Breath, breath and close your eyes and mumbles loudly "I am going to die, I am going to die, I am going to die."

I took a short flight to Scotland a couple of years ago, sat next to me was a nice girl and when the plane was taxiing she said:

"I have fear of flying, could you talk and keep me distracted?"

Sure, I said.

Then she said.

"Can I hold your hand?"

lol, it was so random !

Perhaps you can do the same OP?

This does seem to work for people, had this twice (albeit without the hand holding :() and it really seemed to help the person in both cases.

Maybe it was just that I was so annoying it distracted the person from how afraid they were :o

Maybe I'm a bit blaisse about it but I love flying and take off/landing. The rest is boring. If the plane crashes I'll be dead and all my worries will be gone so nothing to worry about. ;) If I live same old ****, different day. ;)

So just breathe deep breathes, take a security blanket or hold someone's hand, listen to music and try to enjoy it. Or drink a lot beforehand if you're not a drink who can't handle their alcohol.

I spent the best part of 4 years flying for work and met quite a few fearful flyers in that time.
Im amazed at how common it is.
I only had two emergency landings in my time and both times I was oblivious to the whole thing till I noticed I was landing at the wrong airport on approach.
I actually find flying very relaxing. You get to sit down uninterrupted by the phone and watch a film. There is nothing else to do. So just sit there and relax!
Maybe it's just because I was flying on work time, but being paid to watch a film eat free food and chill out was always fine for me!

It's just a mindset. Get a film you really want to watch on the phone and if you get nervous at a noise or jolt. Take a look at the person nearby who has been on a million flights.. Do they look worried? No? Go back to film :)

Thank.

Anyway, i got on a flight about 8 weeks ago. Had a panic attack when they closed the doors! Then pilot said there would be a 30 min delay due to air traffic so we got off!! Wife was mad with me!

Thing is, i was very ill that week and i think that added to my issues.

It has not put me off flying though.

I thought you were a man of faith?
Perhaps I am mixing you up with someone else. I would have thought your faith would simply allow you to understand how unrational this fear is, and if your God wants it, you will die.

Either way, flying in a big plane with a major airline is relatively safe.

Flight would be a much more enjoyable experience if they did adults only flights. No screaming kids. And then they could rip out all those horrific cheap seats and replace them with big comfy couches. And then, instead of a trolley service, just have a couple of bars serving drinks and snacks. And instead of crappy in-flight movies they played different music in different sections of the plane so you could get your funk on with a little 70s groove and a screwdriver or maybe a bit of 80s new wave with a Bacardi.

You've just described first class on an A380

I hate flying with a passion and it scares the life out of me. Being an ex Aircraft engineer for 16 years does not help. Knowing what all the noises are and not being allowed in the cockpit to keep an eye on things is hell.

On the contrary, I've founded knowing what all the noises are, and knowing what all the control surfaces are etc. more comforting than not. I'd love to be in the cockpit, but that's just out of love for flying than anything.

I don't like it either but i know it is a comparatively irrational fear. I think a lot of it stems from watching too many disaster films. I like going abroad on holiday so just suck it up and do it.

The old phrase "what is the point in living if you cant live" always helps as well :)
