Hi guys, My new PC build is still a few weeks off, Hopefully the RX480 custom cards will be out by then.
What sort of improvement over the stock RX480 are we likely to see, and will the Custom RX480 potentially be an R9 390 killer?
As of now though, how does the RX480 stack up against the R9 390 cards?

Cheers

I would say the 480 and 390 are about the same in most games, just a few fps either way.
But the 480 uses nearly half the power of the 390,plus it beats it in few dx12 games.
I would wait for the custom 480 cards to come out, which should be mid july, before you decide.

Might be wrong but I have a sneaky feeling the 480 will improve with driver updates, however I would wait custom coolers, I'm dying to know what the Powercolor devil 480 is

Cheers for the feedback guys. The first custom card arrived much sooner than I thought.
Sapphires RX480 Nitro looks great, love the backplate, can't wait to see a review when it arrives. It will be interesting to see how this card fairs against Nvidia's upcoming 1060.
I wait with bated breath :)

If it was me, AIB 480.

Newer technology, half the power consumption, HDR and latest display connection support, will mature like a fine wine.

Seriously? So the 290 and 390 were basically the same and now the 480 is as well? They really need to stop releasing the same cards. Sure power consumption is going to be great for laptops now, but this is still a complete stagnation in their gpus.

290 and 390 were essentially the same albeit with a very minor core OC and higher clocked, higher capacity VRAM. Owners were very lucky to hit 1.2GHz and get a ~ 10% performance boost. AMD were stuck on 28nm.
Ref 480s have already been clocking around 1.4 with the right conditions and reaching Fury performance at 380X release price point while supping >100W less than the 28nm parts.

I would say the 480 is quite a bit different then the 290/390 were. A new GCN version and supporting 4k/60fps encode/decode with a primitive discard accelerator, all which the 290/390 can't do. On top of that with hdmi 2.0 and DP1.3/4 with HDR - A bit more than a die shrink.

Everyone has been told for the last 6 months at least that the big GPU, Vega, will be coming towards the end of the year - some report that it'll be as early as October.

It's a shame that AMD doesn't have anything as a direct competitor to the 1070/80, but it'll come in the next 4-5 months or so.

I can appreciate that they've got some new tech in there and they're clearly not the same, but it still blows my mind how similar performance is. Ultimately the performance is what matters and it's 3 GPUs in a row that are performing very similar. In comparison, compare the 770, 970 and 1070.

You're comparing equivalent level Nvidia cards with non equivalent level AMD cards.

RX480 is a replacement for the 380X, not 290 or 390.

So where will the 1060 fit in to this picture? I have been comparing the 480 to the R9 390 range, as the R9 390 Nitro was the card I had originally planned for my build. Now the 480 has a Nitro how would it compare to the R9 390 Nitro?
Also, will the 1060 be a direct competitor to the 480 and 390 in terms of performance and price?
I'm settled on the rest of the components of the build, so all my focus is now solely directed at the GPU. Pretty exciting time actually :)

I'm going to assume Nvidia will release the 1060 to compete with the RX480 - both are mid range parts, both replacing other mid range parts (1060 is the new 960, like the RX480 is the new 380X).

The only reason the 390/X and the RX480 are being compared is because of their similar performance and price. Before long the 390/X will be sold off cheap as it's end of line, and something will come along to replace it (and the Nano/Fury cards).
