Quick Q: Just ordered a Zotac GTX 1070, it's says 500w power recommended ...

If its a very good 460w like Gold or better rated from a top brand like Seasonic or Superflower it should just about cope as long as you do not overclock the card or your system.

If its a junk PSU then you could have issues and a lot of potential coil whine.

They assume bottom of barrel for PSU recommendations.

So they are talking about a 500W high street-sold QTec/generic junk unit, good branded PSUs bought from OcUK can safely go under.

I've just sunk all my cash into this card so I can't buy a new PSU right now, maybe next week.

It's not going to damage anything by running it for that time or anything is it? Sorry I'm a noob when it comes to PSUs.

If your power supply is a decent brand it will be fine - such as XFX, Seasonic, Corsair, Antec, Superflower, etc. If it's a no name with non braided cables and cost £10 I wouldn't fancy risking it!

What PSU do you have, exact model and brand please?

You're probably going to laugh at me but it's the original PSU that is in a Dell XPS tower. The PSU is a Dell AC460AD-00

The tower and the PSU are the only things I never changed as I never had the need to (till now I guess)

First rules of performance computer building... Don't skimp on the psu... A dodgy one could end up costing you a lot more in the long run. I would wait till you can afford a decent psu

Dell usually have good power supplies, if its 1070 FE Zotac I wouldn't have anything to worry about.

I was planning on running a 1070 off a 350w gold

It's the Zotac AMP

If I get some coil whine, I'll be ok with that, it'll only be for a week till I get paid and can get a better PSU. I'm not going to cause any damage though right?

From looking around it looks like the oem is Acbel. It was used in the Dell xps 8300 which came with a 2600k and a 5870.

You should be ok assuming you don't overclock anything and keep with a similar load out otherwise.

It's still a rather basic psu however and would not suggest using it long term

Cheers for this.

Nah, I'm not going to overclock it. My last card was a 6950 which I had pushed to 6970 performance. So this 1070 will be a huge upgrade anyway so no need to push performance just yet ;)

An update for anyone who may have something similar.

My 460w PSU is running my Zotac AMP 1070 just fine with absolutely no coil whine.
It's even connected by 2 x 6 pin to 8 pin adapters and there's no issues. Just to be on the safe side, I'll be getting a new PSU next week.

Good call on getting a new PSU. The PSU is far more important than people think and I would rather spend a bit on a good quality one than chance it with a cheaper one.
