2 staff have left without notice - anything i can do?

Wish I worked a place that accommodating. Unfortunately people will take advantage of the better natured out there. Don't stop looking after staff, most will work hard for you.

Which reminds me....off to work I go. To the sort of place that "manage" people out the door with pathetic rules. Scumbags.

Did you miss where I said that I did help alleviate by lending them money when it was needed?

Are you really trying to make a dig at this? Really think about how you appear right now, posting in this thread with a needless sarcy smartass reply like that.

I think Caged was saying "paying them more, so they can afford food". But i could be wrong.

It sounds to me that you are one of those business owners who think they are doing there staff a favour by employing them, but in reality it's symbiotic relationship between staff and owners. If those members of staff leaving are able to costs you thousands of pounds in lost business, then they are obviously a integral part of your business and should be paid enough to reflect this. You have evidently not done this as you have had to loan them money so they are able to eat. You are then shocked when they leave with minimal notice which seems to reflect your minimal pay.

Sounds to me like they've either got themselves a more stable job, or they've packed up and gone home. Given the recent political events, I would assume the second option being more likely.

You say the work is minimum wage, so why can you not just get some agency staff in to do the job while you get some full time employees again?

If the work is actually quite skilled in nature, then maybe you should pay to reflect this?

Which is why he wouldn't win a court case if they are unskilled minimum wage.

If he had subcontracted it out or get temps in at double money then he could make a claim.

He failed to do his duty to minimize his losses.

OP - as someone who apparently owns and operates their own business, don't you think it's slightly odd to be seeking employment law advice from internet strangers, particularly when it relates to real, actual people?

What if we said 'SUE THEM!' - would you do that?

What if we said "PROMOTE THEM!'- would you do that?

I'm just trying to work out how much misplaced trust you're investing in us.

As has been said, they most likely left for a reason... albeit reasons that might have been out of your control.

Without knowing the full story, you can't really comment. For all you know, they might have received abuse in the street and decided that it's not worth being in the country or as others have suggested, got a more stable/better job.

Well, I left my previous job with almost no notice because I found a much better one (with much better pay) and my boss was a total **** to everyone. 2 other guys left around the same time, one waited until he got paid at the end of the month and never returned. He started his new job the next day.

If staff turnover is high and people are doing stuff like this, theres something wrong. Also minimum wage jobs are pretty much throw-away. If you pay peanuts you get peanuts (as well as no staff loyalty). That's just business.

The job I'm in now...I could earn a bit more working somewhere else (though this one isn't bad). But they treat us much better than most places. So I stay.

Not necessarily as you can misplace your trust in anybody which includes the people you know. Anyway I gave him some advice having dealt with this on a regular basis with my own company.

People leaving employment is going to happen a lot in a minimum wage position, no matter how nice you think you are being to them, especially if there are no opportunities for promotion. Anyone with any sense would leave at the drop of a hat as soon as anything better paying came along. I'm sure it's nothing personal.

well you've made a whole load of assumptions and are thankfully wrong. they didn't need money early to eat, i didn't say that they did.

i've no idea why this forum is so hostile and quick to pick apart at tiny brief bits of information and then fill in the gaps with huge assumptions.

exactly this. The key here it to have a contingency plan. Sounds like the OP didn't have one, and also if OP is now losing so much business because they are gone, then surely they should not have just been min wage monkeys,

Then again this is GD so we likely haven't been furnished with the full facts and as they say, history is written by the victors...................

They both left together? Were they a husband and wife couple ? Or a pair of gays ?

Seams odd why they both left? Maybe their love wasn't accepted so they decided to run off together.
Kinds sweet when you look at it like that.
