Hi all

Got the keys to our first home this morning all very exciting :)

The house needs a complete freshen up so there is a lot of decorating to do most of which I'll be tackling myself, maybe with a hand from my farther if I can persuade him!

When we viewed the house we noticed some strange patches in parts of the ceiling, they look like large holes have been drilled then filled in again afterwards, they are only upstairs.

In the airing cupboard seems to be the worst of them.
The back ones are the worst with clearly water damage.
They seem dry now but i'll keep my eye on them for sure.

We viewed a few houses in the area and they all had them though I dont remember them having as many as ours does, or maybe they where just repaired better?

Ours have been re plastered but not painted.

The house has a flat roof so I was guessing they are left after repairs to the roof maybe? can any one shed some light on them?

Also most of the walls in the house are plaster board with wall paper that's been painted. A lot of the paper is lifting in the corners and on the seems.

Is it best to try and glue the paper back down then paper over the top of it with a heavy duty lining paper and then paint?

Or is it better to try and carefully remove the paper and paint straight onto the plaster board, filling any defects before painting?

I can see I'm going to be spending some time researching but all suggestions are welcome.

Before any of that I've a headache with a fitted stair lift that I have no idea how to get rid of?!

cheers.

Holes in airing cupboard are probably from pipes from an old previous water cylinder with header tank in the attic setup.

EDIT scratch that if its a flat roof.

Keep the stair lift, how awesome for going to bed after a few too many

Haha, it did cross my mind :)

yeah flat roof so no attic.
Can only think they where drilled to get access to the roof but why I don't know.

How old is the roof and what is it made of?

Torch on felt(most common type) has a life span of about 20 years. If you're lucky, the boards won't need replacing but it won't cost much more if they do.

Could've been drilled to drain water...

Water damage would also start to bring down the wall paper.

If its a flat roof, could it be holes to pump insulation in similar to cavity wall insulation, bearing in mind there's no loft space to put insulation in

Our 1930s rented semi had those round holes in the ceiling in various rooms. Never worked it out. No flat room there as there was quite a good attic space. I always thought they were old light fittings that had been removed.

Might be worth checking with the stair lift manufacturer as I'm sure at some point in the past I've been told that some of them will buy back old systems or something like that.

They will for naff all money.

I stuck mine on eBay with buyer to collect and remove, made £500 compared to the £100 offer from the manufacturer (it was only 2 months old).

Looks like hastily done repair jobs to get the house sold. I'd get the roof checked for leaks as that's more then likely the cause.

Edit -

Most of the other issues are just down to sloppy DIY work.
