Hi all. As the title says, i don't feel like the computer is performing how it should be. You might be thinking "What makes you think that" etc, and i'll list my specs in full, giving as much detail as i can, then ill explain why i think its performing badly in detail, too. Hopefully someone knows a little more than me and can point me towards improving its performance, or maybe someone has the sameish rig and im over rating what performance i should be getting..

My PC Specifications;

Intel Core i7 3770 (NON K)
Corsair Vengeance 1600MHZ DDR3 RAM
MSI GTX 980 OC 4G EDITION
H55 CPU Cooler
Corsair CX 750M Power Supply
Crucial MX100 128GB SSD
2TB WD BLACK
Corsair K65 LUX RGB Keyboard
Corsair VOID Wireless Headset
Corsair SABRE RGB Mouse
AOC GSync Monitor (G2460PG) plugged into GPU via Displayport
WINDOWS 10 Wireless Controller Adapter
WINDOWS 10 Operating Software (November TH2)

Running on latest NVidia Drivers
Running latest version of NVidia GeForce Experience

Why do i think its under performing?

  1. My friends PC has the same processor with a GTX 970 and 8GB of DDR3 RAM and on at least 3 games we both play his PC comfortably out performs me. Orcs Must Die: Unchained, on HGH/ULTRA he can hold 60FPS throughout full games, yet i dip between 45-60 at times in the same game as him.
  2. My games go black for a split second every so often before returning, low framerate which slowly gets back to what it was before the black screen.
  3. I struggle with micro stuttering in games even though i use a GSync monitor.

Things I've tried:

Changing NVidia control panel settings to various settings
Using NVidia Inspector on a game by game basis to no avail
Formatted Windows 10 numerous times
Checked CPU temps 29c idle <54c full load
Checked GPU Temperatures 38c idle <65c full load (custom fan curve too)
Tried reinstalling all games i get problems with (mostly all my games)

I invite anyone to help me, its driving me mental.

What resolution are you playing on? If you're running 1440p and he's running 1080p that could be the difference.

not sure about the occasional slow down though, could be memory buffering, but that's just a guess. :(

Another thought, if you swap GPU with your friend and test again, would be able to see if there's a problem with your graphics card.

Knew i'd missed something!

Both playing 1080p. It should also be noted that I have a 2nd monitor plugged into my on board graphics card.

And no, the game isn't going through the on board card, I've already checked that! :p

Could it be a RAM stick causing it? Might try taking one out for a day or so...

There's definitely something funky going on with your cpu/gpu. Could be power delivery related but hard to say, it's mostly something that needs testing.

I've noticed in some games, such as H1Z1 and ORCS being some of those titles, my GPU never goes above 40% load, even on full settings..

That could be a problem with my GPU, but could also be to do with un-optimization on the games. Because for some games, and benchmarks it his 99-100% load no problems.

Also CPU hits 100% easily with prime95.

What do you have running in the background?

Try plugging your second monitor into the GPU, not the onboard graphics.

Are you guys testing with same drivers?

Yep same latest drivers.

Just tried that, getting the same problems. I know this sounds silly, but when my games goes black screen i notice that the nVidia share indicator gets a line through it.

Run unigine https://unigine.com/en/products/benchmarks and monitor your GPU usage. That should hit 100%

if not there could be some thermal throttling.
