Will AMD cards get a boost in Microsoft DX12 games?

With the recent announcement that Microsoft is releasing all of their "Exclusives" going forward on both Xbox One and Windows (buy one, get the other free) this i assume means these games will be heavily geared towards DX12.

With AMD Hardware being in the Xbox, do we think these games will run better on AMD hardware, or even easier to tune for AMD hardware going forward? could this potentially give AMD a much needed edge in the GPU / CPU gaming segment?

Personally if we get nothing more than a freebie copy im happy with that, i have both Xbone and a PC, and theres a fair few titles on this list i will be buying.

I think AMD came very strongly into DX12 initially. But I'm pretty sure Nvidia have all but caught up now. There is something about Async compute that gives some advantage to AMD but I don't know enough about it. Someone will though.

I'd say they more likely to run better on AMD hardware as they power both the Xbone and PS4. Console hardware does function a bit differently to PC hardware so whether the optimisations are passed over when they're ported to PC is a different matter.

I read an article a while back that stated Microsoft delivered Xbox One development kits in the form of PC's, so basically the developers wrote the code on effectively a PC and ported it into the Xbox one to streamline etc.

Surely if this is the case, the Scorpio kit will be largely the same as this, surely this must end up with some edge for AMD hardware, or atleast mean when they port it back to the PC a lot of the fine tuning done for consoles is still largely relevant on the AMD hardware etc?

It's a straight port to their windows platform I think Greg, and I doubt any of the titles will end up Nvidia gameworks titles either due to them being written for the console a d ported to Windows being as there's zero Nvidia hardware inside their console.

Not sure how much dx12 these titles will use either, I'm excited for Sea of Thieves though personally.

These are what used to be Xbox Exclusives titles, now they are Xbox and PC exclusive titles, quite how much PC refinement they get remains to be seen. Dunno if Nvidia will even be able to break into this party either with their Gimpworks as anything that brings a negative impact to either of the platforms won't sit well with Microsoft I expect.

If anything you could see some more potential for AMD sponsorship on these games, if AMD help optimise them for PC and can help influence performance on the Xbox also the Microsoft I imagine will be all over that as it seems they are trying hard to push back into the PC market.

Deliberately gimping or hamstringing a competitor won't sit well with them, so I while I think AMD may help with optimisation I doubt it would be at the expense of Nvidia.

Ultimately though these games are written for the console primarily and being given free to the PC although I believe the reverse is also true

AMD **** all over Nvidia in DX12, we will see a concentrated effort by AMD to make sure that continues with forthcoming DX12 supported games.

Is that only true in games that use A-Sync though? purely due to Nvidia not being as good at it?

No in general, AMD gains an advantage even in non async games, due to the lower CPU overhead of DX12. Nvidia card don't gain that much of an advantage over DX11 due to their DX11 drivers already having low overhead.

Async is overrated. Wow it helps ashes a little bit. Woopti doo. Nvidia can get similar performance a different way i think they said anyhow.

I would wait for actual DX12 games to come out to make any meaningful judgement as currently have AoTS which for obvious reasons I personally would take with a pinch of salt (although looking at the benchmark thread Nvidia cards seem to be doing pretty well) and most other games have some DX12 features but are DX11 games at their core. It's going to take a while for true DX12 games that utilise its potential just like the jump to DX11, DX12 is more of a marketing tool at the moment.

Right so the gains are mainly due to AMD's currently inferior DX11 drivers, where Nvidias are already well optomised, thus they (Nvidia) gain less and AMD gain more..

So eventually both vendors should even out somewhat

Check Hitman out. Probably the best showcase atm for DX12.

Like above we need exclusive DX12 games to really see the benefits, no dx11 + dx12 just pure dx12.

Still waiting for those magical "consoles have same hardware so uhhhhh dat = AMD fastar For Basically Free™???" benefits.

You can try a prayer to Kek but I think you're outta luck.

Even if it does run better on AMD hardware but the time the new 1080ti release they could be well behind in power for anyone to actually notice.

I like how people talking out of their arse instead of googling some benchmarks and see for themselves what the deal with DX12 is - i.e. Nvidia getting absolutely destroyed. I know you don't want to face this fact, but it is one nonetheless.
